Usb dual HD Hauppauge tuner sound?

Most stations are transmitting DD encoded sound in my area. I can verify this by viewing the signals directly on my LG TV connected directly on the antenna and seeing the DD logo on the channel info.  My audio receiver also automatically enters the digital Dolby mode when audio is streamed to it by the optical tv output.

On the other hand I also have a Hauppauge dual HD atsc 1.0 tuner stick attached to a PC running Windows 10 and nextpvr.  It in turn is attached to the same tv using an HDMI cable on hdmi1.  The Hauppauge specs say the device outputs AC3 sound which I understand is digital dolby... So I am expecting the audio receiver to pick this up and enter digital Dolby mode... Instead I get stereo audio.

What am I misunderstanding? Or missing? Hints appreciated. I loaded the Hauppauge "drivers only" package for the tuner stick and am using the latest Windows version of nextpvr.

Should I abandon this if it's easier and switch to a silicon dust 4k tuner, as my receiver can also decode Dolby Atmos?  There are at least 4 atsc3 channels nearby which is not a lot to justify the extra expense when I get 40 atsc 1 channels.

Thanks for any advice to set me straight on the sound out of the Hauppauge stick.

Not sure I know what you are referring to? Next pvr latest version I generally use the windows app to watch, not the browser if that is what you mean.

Yes ok there are many clients. Kodi as an example doesn't do pass through you would need to do PCM out. This does give the same results though.

Assuming you are using LAV32 check the audio settings in the tray icon

No I don't use Kodi or anything other than nextpvr as I like to keep it simple.

The audio renderer is default.
The audio decoders are all LAV Audio Decoder except AAC Audio which says Microsoft dtv-dvd audio decoder. Only use mapped audio decoder is checked during ts playback.

Maybe I should just swap a different PC into this config and see if that changes anything? I will have time for that in a couple of days.

Did you check the LAV setup?

Hmm beginning to think you mean something other than looking at the decoder screen on the nextpvr app?  I have the lav 77 stuff installed.  The decoder screen in nextpvr says  The audio decoders are all LAV Audio Decoder except AAC Audio which says Microsoft dtv-dvd audio decoder. Only use mapped audio decoder is checked during ts playback.

I just got an email from Hauppauge and they claim their device puts out whatever the antenna gives it... so if the station is transmitting DD5.1 they output that to the USB port and that from there on it is up to the app you are using to forward that to the TV.

Beside the decoders there is a box [...] click that.

To start it might be better to do this while NextPVR is playing video and go to the tray icons. You can enable bitstreaming ac3 to see if that turns on your light.

That is correct. NextPVR will be recording whatever the broadcaster is sending. Whether it plays as AC3 depends on the client or decoders you’ve selected (in the case of NextPVR.exe)
