The very short version:

I'd like a recommendation for a remote control to use with GBPVR ( have Hauppauge 500MCE, so no joy there ).

The very long version:

About three months ago, I began looking into building my own PVR, and GBPVR was my very first stop. Easy to install ( XP Pro, on Dimension 2400, nVidia PCI graphics card ), capture card configured fine, and I then ordered the generic MCE remote from NewEgg ( I'd provide a link, but apparently NewEgg doesn't carry them any more... wonder if there's any connection ... ).

After working with this setup for a while, I was nearly happy with the results. GBPVR worked well, but I never could get the remote to be anything but flaky ( red light would light up on the receiver, but response would be sluggish or non-existant, with the occasional double- or even triple-responses ). There was also the very rare, but still occasional, reboot for no reason at all.

So, with a sigh, I reluctantly reloaded the box for MCE, to try the official MS solution. With a 30-day trail ( before required registration ), I figured I could see if a more expensive solution would work better. In a word, nope. MCE blue-screened fruequently ( at least once a day ), remote was still flaky, lots of other trouble. Best user interface I've used to date, but much less reliable. Even splurged by trying a second machine briefly, in case the 2400 with a PCI video card ( no AGP / PCI-e slot ) was unsuitable. Still no luck.

Grumbling about having to deal with Linux, I finally dug out MythTV and gave it a whirl. Extremely complicated setup ( even following guides and HOWTOs ), lots of options, a pretty-good-but-still-complicated UI, and still the occasional problem: this time it was MythTV would choose to record audio sometimes, but not others. Later, it switched to recording audio on the first tuner most of the time, and never on the second tuner.

Somehow, my wife didn't find it funny when Jeopardy! would record without audio. It made finding out the answers a bit more difficult. Smile

So, back to the original drawing board. Remembering that GBPVR gave me the least trouble of the three, I reloaded XP ( home this time ), got everything working, and I'm now back in business. Two minor problems this time so far:

1) Whenever I start decoding ( watch TV or recorded show ), I have at least a five second lag before playback starts. Annoying, but liveable.

2) The remote, despite my best efforts to make it work better, still is flaky as all get-out. Now that I've tried four different installations, (XP Pro, XP MCE, Fedora Core 4, and XP Home ), three different drivers ( MCE drivers, MCEIR custom drivers, and Linux drivers ), three different PVR software setups ( GBPVR, MCE, MythTV), two different computers, I've decided that the common factors with the flaky remote are (1) me and (2) the remote.

Since replacing me isn't an option, I've decided to replace the remote. Anyone have recommendation for a remote that's easy to configure and relaible to operate?

You comments about reboots worry me. It sounds like you machine is not stable. My machine has probably spontaneously reboot twice in the last two years, and I'm pretty sure these werent at all related to GB-PVR.

Quote:1) Whenever I start decoding ( watch TV or recorded show ), I have at least a five second lag before playback starts. Annoying, but liveable.
Thats a bit of a blanket statement, I'm sure it varies depending on what you are doing. It takes me about 1.5 seconds to start playing a pre recorded video. About a second to start live tv in live preview mode with an analog tuner. About four seconds to start live tv in timeshift mode with an analog tuner. About three seconds to start live tv in live preview mode with an digital tuner.

Explicitly specifying the video/audio decoders on the playback tab can cut down on time that Directshow sometimes spends when first creating directshow graphs.

Quote:2) The remote, despite my best efforts to make it work better, still is flaky as all get-out.
I probably would have recommended an MCE remote, but obviously thats not working out well for you. I've been using an MCE2004 remote in my lounge and it seems to pass my wife's high standards. She has zero tolerance for problems.

Maybe you could consider adding a retail PVR150 to you machine, and using the remote that comes with it?

I'm using the Remote Wonder 2 from Ati with a plugin provided on http://remotew.free.fr/ It has most of the functions as the pvr 150 remote (which I also have). If you are any good at C then you can make your own plug-in or modify someone elses source code. I'm struggling to figure out how to compile a dll in C so I'll have to rely on other people's code.

I like the RW2 because it's RF (no more pointing at the computer). I can change the volume from the other end of my house (20ft away through walls), it's snappier to respond and most of all it feels good in your hands. Also, you can control other applications with it as well - I launch WinDVD (Custom Task) and Zoom Player (my Videos) from GBPVR and it looks pretty integrated.

You can't buy it by itself as far as I know, but you can get it with the Ati AIW cards for about $150 CAD (too bad AIW doesn't work with GBPVR). Try to snag one used for about $100 CAD. You can however buy the Remote Wonder 1 for under $40 CAD.

I've got both a Remote Wonder and Remote Wonder 2 winging their way to New Zealand as I type this, so there is a good chance you can look forward to decent support for these remotes in the future.

How about that for timing. I just had a knock at the door and my two remotes were just arriving by courier. I like toys...

I had a computer that rebooted randomly during any intense CPU activity. I ended replacing everything in the computer (in the past the problem was RAM) - this time it was the sound card. It just blew me away that one of the simplest (or so I thought) components of a computer would cause that.

I'm using the StreamZap remote with GBPVR, working just fine. Only issue is the color buttons that some plugins use don't work with this remote.

But for the price, it's not a bad buy, Provantage sells it for around $20 US.

This sounds great, I've got a shuttle XPC box running GBPVR with a pvr-150. It only has one PCI slot, and I'd like to upgrade to a 500MCE but haven't because of the remote issue. I have an unused Remote Wonder that I've been toying with, so if GBPVR is going to support it in the future, here comes the duel tuner 500 Yea!!!!!!!

Thanks Sub..... Great software I love it...........

Initial comments about the remotes...

The Remote Wonder 2 is a little square on the underside, and because of this I find it uncomfortable to hold.

The Remote Wonder Plus is better to hold, but its smaller than I thought it would be, and its a bit awkard to press the number keys without changing your grip.

I havnt plugged in either yet, so cant comment on functionality.

Hi Sub,

I don't know how you are going to implement the RW support, but I'd like to add one request. Some people think that having the RW always focus on one application (e.g. GBPVR) is preferrable. I am one of those who do not. This implementation really hinders HTPC users like me who like to launch applications from their front end.

So in short, if you are building a plugin please have it so that it only sends instructions to GBPVR only if it's in focus.

Thanks...and can't wait to get some better integration with the remote.
