One of the channels is changing its name slightly in the next few weeks. What is the best way to edit the channel name? The channel name only appears under “Scheduler” entries on the server if it is an “Advanced Recording”.  Is the best way going to be to edit the name in the CHANNEL database to keep the same OID?

You can change the name with the wrench on the name in Settings->Channels but that won't change the readable source you see but that is cosmetic.

Users scripts including Advanced recording that use the Name and not the Capture OID would need modification.

One thing sub might need to comment on is how this coud impact the rescans and EPG mapping since the name is part of the locator in the channel mapping table for some digital channels ie ATSC

Thanks I have 22 entries that mention the channel name! I have quite a large number entries in the Scheduler which are "All Channels". I think something went wrong quite a few years ago and some channel names got changed to "All Channels" but that should not matter here! I will have a double EPG entry for a while to cover things like channel OID changes or other changes until things settle down!! Better to have two recordings to cover the changes as one of them may handle the changes!

If you delete channels you can end up with All Channel recordings.

One of the quirks of avoiding duplicates is you can't automatically schedule the same recording on different channels so not sure your proposed solution will make any difference unless one actually fails.

On the 16th of July all the UKTV channels are changing Names, so Dave will become U&Dave, Yesterday will become U&Yesterday, Drama will become U&Drama - you get the picture - U&Ugly or what!

My question is will NPVR (and Kodi) be ampersand friendly or will escapology be required?
It's not an overly complicated system - it's more - overly simple operatives  Huh

I didn't realise ALL the UKTV channels were changing as I have only seen "Yesterday" warnings! I suppose that for current recordings the best way is to create a new Recurring Recording from the EPG and delete the old ones. Is there a way to edit a Recurring Recordings in NextPVR as cannot see one apart from using SQLite??
I have quite a few  Recurring Recordings when viewed in Kodi with the channel number is "0" for several channel names. I suspect I have given channels a different number at some point! Have they been changed to an "All Channels" recording?

No worries with icons, the ampersand is not a problem, it has been used here since GBPVR days.  There is one being sent for Create & Craft" now. Many people will be counting on your icon pack.   You can actually change the names manually anytime to start getting used to them.   In pvr.nextpvr you  will need to force updates to the icon either by station or all of them.

You can change the recurring channel in Kodi.

It was not a renumber.  When you delete a channel or tuner and then readd, in rescanning it is assigned a new number.  That is why rescanning without deleting is recommended.

When I added the option to change the recurring channel number above I faked them to "All Channel" to highlight that they need to be changed to work as described. These show in the kodi debug log like this.

2024-06-22 13:46:10.185 T:28144  debug <general>: AddOnLog: pvr.nextpvr: Invalid channel uid 7074

I am using X-NEWA as my NextPVR client and have done for many years and can only change the Padding values!

However I have just installed "Normal" KODI client which I have never installed before and you can "Edit" Recurring Recordings. Unfortunately I cannot install it on any of my NextPVR clients as I use TVheadend for Live TV and it uses the TV directory!! However I have an ancient laptop and a LibreElec boot disk I can use!!

This makes no sense, Kodi allows multiple PVRs, and even multiple instances of PVR so you can connect to different NextPVR backends. Temporarily disable TVHeadend if you find it too confusing.
