Hi,

BACKGROUND: I just had a scheduled recording that didn't work, however I was doing a few things like starting/stoping GB-PVR & watching AVIs at the time. I was doing this from a remote TV using the secondary monitor output too, as I've programed my remote (via girder) to be able to start and stop GB-PVR (i.e. not sure if there could have been a warning message that I didn't see). I did notice the log showed the recording service had restarted a few times that evening.

QUESTION: What useage scenarios could possible impact a recording not working (i.e. what should I be aware of to ensure a schedule recording won't be impacted) - for example:
- stopping starting GB-PVR remoting from a secondary monitor
- watching AVI files
- watching live TV at the time the recording is supposed to start (on a different channel)
- other activity on the PC
- others???

thanks

If you only have 1 tuner card, this will do it.
3x MVPs (not used anymore)
XBMC
Hauppauge 150 via SVideo
Comcast Digital Cable
Motorola HD Cable box channel changed via Firewire
Vista Home Premium with RDP hack
AMD Athalon 64 5000+
340gig sata, plus 80SATA+3x160IDE Drives in XP machine for storage.

oh..is there a config option to override the LIVE TV? (or ideally prompt "do you want to keep watching LIVE TV or record your scheduled show?")

Actually, I've thought with later versions of gbpvr that if you were watching TV when a scheduled recording needed to start, it kicked you out. It has with me. Also, trying to watch live tv with a recording going results in an invalid object message (or something like that).

I don't think live tv should have caused you trouble because it shouldn't have worked for you if the recording was going.

Not for me. Maybe its the skin you're using. I get a popup window that tells me the tuner(s) are in use, and asks me it I'd like to watch one of the shows which are recording.

Of course I think you're right. I do have a memory of that happening in the past... maybe it was like that in an earlier release, or it may have been related to Live TV on the MVP when a recording was in-progress. Whatever the case, I do recall recently being told the tuners were in use.

Preproduce the problem and post your gbpvr.exe.log and I'll take a look.

What skin are you using?

hi sub

It's only happened once so far (and I was mucking around with GB-PVR a bit at the time) so the intent of the post was to understand what sorts of things could impact a recording being successful - e.g. can you do anything in gbpvr.exe without impacting a successful recording, but if you restarting the service then this could be a problem?

BTW - I've noted twice that recordings in the morning are a bit choppy, so I'm trying to test and work out re (a) why - whether various overnight jobs affect the recording service, like xp update, virus update, podcast downloads etc, and (b) whats the work around - whether restarting the gbpvr service each morning could assist this, which seemed to be the case potentiall. Are you aware whether a gbpvr recording service could give rise to choppy recordings such that a recording service restart would make things better? (I acknowledge I need to do more testing)

I was actually asking about wtg's problem he mentioned above where he was getting an 'invalid object' message.

Yeah, you should be able to pretty much anything without any problems, except restarting the recording service which will obviously restart your recording - overwriting whatever has been recorded so far.

I'm not aware of any issues that would require regular restarts of the recording service. I leave my main HTPC running 24x7, and it usually run for a few weeks without restarts.

hi sub - I actually had the problem a 2nd time where it didn't record a show that I'd scheduled. I'll send through the logs to support if thats ok. I was watching a previous recording at the time however that shouldn't matter. When I went to start watching the item that was seemingly being recorded (as the GBPVR UI indicated it was recording) I got an error message + afterwards in the video directory I see there is only a 6k *.dvr-ms file.

Interestly the next morning when I tried to schedule a recording I got a an error message "An error occured while processing a the request on the server: System.Net.Socket.SocketException: The established connection was aborted by the software in your host machine". After restarting the GBPVR recording service this fixed the problem. Hence I was wondering if the recording service had gotten itself into a funny state (just guessing).

I also note there are some WEATHER errors coming up regularly, e.g. "14/10/2005 6:53:54 AM.197 VERBOSE [25] Weather plugin Encountered unknown current weather type '<meta....etc"

I do run zone alarm.

Will send through logs if thats OK

Thanks
