Folks,

I've just moved from the hauppage scheduling 'free' software that came with my 350 card to GBPVR. and I'm most impressed. however I have noticed one thing. my record programes are hugh with regards to my old mpegs from the hauppage software.

1 hours of Tv from hauppage was about 1Gb
1 hours of TV from GBPVR is 1.8Gb so I'm eating hard disk space twice as fast as before,

What have I missed, or is this normal ?

Regards
Richard

I like quality, so a 1hr recording is about 3Gb for me (6000/224). It will also vary slightly based on video content (how bright/dark the majority is)

You can go into the config and lower the quality. It will make the files smaller. But your quality will suffer.

so what you are really saying is 'buy some larger hard disks' and 1.8 gb files are not unusual

Cool..... Off to buy larger hard disk....

Thanks

I have mine set to 4000, so 1 hour shows are just about 2gb. Plus I can just fit 3 shows on a dvd after editing out the comercials. I have tried playing with the bitrate for quality, and I honestly can't tell much difference once I get over the 3000 mark. So I worked backwords on a goal of 3 shows per disk and came up with 4000.

No, not unusual at all. The only reason you didn't see files as large with the Hauppauge software is that your default settings didn't have as high a bitrate. It's the hauppauge drivers that record in both instances, using whatever settings they're told to by the software that schedules it. Gbpvr's defaults are just higher. Lower the gbpvr defaults if you were satisfied with what you got out the Hauppauge-provided software.

Do you guys use a constant or a variable bitrate?

I use constant...I nevr saw a big diff on file sizes using variable, and it seems like constant would be less work for the system. Also, it's easier to plan for drive space remaining that way.

And maybe it's me being a perfectionist freak, or maybe it's my setup/tv, but I see a difference between 4000 and 6000. Below a certain lvl, and there is some dancing pixels in certain types of video output.

How do the numbers 4000 and 6000 correspond to the high, medium and low settings?
