If it were me, I would run some tests without any routers etc and just plug the MVP in direct to the PC's NIC with a crossover cable to see if it operates. Could eliminate some gear and maybe find the answer.

That is a good idea. I would not eliminate the router as a possiblity just because the Hauppauge software works with it. Since Hauppauge designed the hardware, they would be in the best position to come up with the most robust software to work with it.

What's involved in going with the cross-over as a test?

Can I get the ip address into the MVP for my router, then, without unplugging power to my MVP just hook-up the cross over? I did this yesterday and I just got an indefinite "connecting to server" msg in MVP. This is a step backwards from what the router was giving me before. Did I miss a step?

Only thing required would be that your PC would have to DHCP turned on to supply the MVP with an IP address.

According to the FAQ in the Wiki, you can use Internet Connection Sharing in WinXP for the DHCP server, or use a separate program. It has been a long time since I used ICS, but it should work.

Simply turning on DHCP in your PC won't do it; that is only the client, not the server.

I had the same issue recently - MVP could connect with Hauppauge software, but not GBPVR. It did work previously, but I do a ton of stuff on this PC, including loading beta MVP software. Somewhere along the line, it stopped working. I tried a ton of stuff, eventually I gave up and started again.

1. uninstalled both Hauppauge and GBPVR
2. deleted all my firewall rules (put the firewall back into "learning" mode)

3. installed the latest Hauppauge beta software from the SHS site (mediamvp_2.5.23242.exe) - MVP connected.
4. installed GBPVR in a NEW directory - so that it didn't use any old settings from the previous installation.
5. stopped Hauppauge services.
6. started MVP server in GBPVR

Every time my firewall popped up a warning regarding any traffic between my PC and the MVP, I created a rule to permit the connection.

GBPVR now connects, all is well in the world. Smile

Tipstir - You are da man!!!

I tried your method of uninstalling GBPVR. (Thanks for the tip about keeping GBPVR.mdb) I reinstalled, went upstairs powered up the MVP and boom, there was GBPVR. Your rationale made perfect sense and I couldn't wait till I got home from work to try it. It worked without disabling McAfee firewall or anything. Hopefully I can get more than 4 hours of sleep tonight Smile .

Thanks to all who helped. I have learned a ton about how the MVP boots up and I feel a lot more comfortable with it. Now back to setting up teh MVP postion tool...

Yup, Tipstir should certainly be lauded for his efforts to help with all things Network and MVP, (among other things like hos skins and plugins!).

The small bugbear for me, and maybe I'm just too much of a purist with this stuff, is that it's a bit of a "black hole solution" to have to resort to uninstalling everything to get it going, because you never really get to identify what the problem was in the first place.

But I guess most folks, by the time they get to the dreaded uninstall/ccleaner/reinstall phase, are so darn happy it works they don't care two hoots HOW :-) ...so long as it worked!

Definitely how I felt when I posted that. So I watched some shows then started tinkering. I installed the theatrelistings and weather plugin as well as MVPscreenposition. While I was tweaking the screen position it did it again Sad

I'm back at the eternal connect screen. It was connecting so well, then I made one final change in teh screen position and I'm here again. I feel like I must have pretty bad luck Smile It had connected maybe 6 or 8 times wonderfully as I restarted teh recording service and now this. I guess I know how I can get it running, but I dunno if its fixed. Thanks everyone for all the help.
