I spent several very frustrating hours trying to get captioning to work...so now that I finally did, I decided to put together a quick how-to. Hopefully it'll save someone some frustration. Note: this is for Windows XP, and I'm using the Hauppage PVR-250 in the United States.

1) First get GB-PVR working without the captions

2) Open the configuration software. In the “Playback” tab, set the video and audio decoder dropdowns to Intervideo. Be sure VMR9 is checked. In the “DVD&Remote” tab, again, set the audio decoder dropdown to Intervideo. In the “Misc” tab, check the closed-caption box.

3) Go to Start – run and type regedit. Find the following directories and be sure that each of the keys is set as follows. (If the key does not exist, create it)
1.HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\hauppauge\hcwTVWnd\SagHarbor\Configs
The 4th byte (2 digit hexadecimal number) of the key for the setting you're trying to use – probably livetv in this case – should be 0e. Probably already is, but check.
2. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Hauppauge\hcwTVWnd]
Change the CC_Connect key from 0 to 1
3. [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Globespan\Parameters\ivac15\Driver]
Set the InsertCCInDvd key to 1

Restart your computer to be sure all changes have taken effect.

To caption live TV: find the show you want to watch, hit quick record, then go to Recordings – Pending and you can watch it a few seconds behind.

you can probably skip step 3, and just run these command prompts (probably, it works fine for me using a 350).
Code:
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\devnz\gbpvr\WSTSRTAnalog.ax"
regsvr32 "c:\program files\devnz\gbpvr\WSTSRTAnalog.ax"
you just have to run those commands after each gbpvr upgrade (a little annoying but nothing major).

Those instructions wmspringer gave above are for the Closed Caption system they use in the states. Its quite different from the teletext system we use here. Reven's comments are more relevant to those using teletext subtitles.

Oops, guess I'd better clarify that

I know 3.3 was the last step that finally got my captions working

I have the AVerMedia M150 PCI TV Tuner card and some specs I found said it supports closed caption in NTSC and SAP Audio. Does this mean that GBPVR could be coaxed to display it? The great how-to-guide in this message is for Hauppage. Does anyone have experience in getting cc to work for the m150 card?

I enabled cc in the Config on the misc tab, but couldn't find Intervideo in the drop-downs.

To be honest, I dont think your AverMedia card will get closed captions with GB-PVR. I had to put in some special logic to get it working with PVR250/350.

Will following the above instructions lead to an "always on" state with captioning? Or will they be easy to turn on and off? I would ideally like to be able to do this using the hauppauge 45 button remote.
