TIP: GBPVR networked client

I'd love to get GB-PVR set up as server/client. Reading through this thread, it seems success is mixed, but some people have definitely got it working.

From a technical point of view this thread is interesting to me to read but all I can say is...

"MVP"

Cheaper, smaller, quieter, already works!



(Unless i'm mistaken, Sage TV uses the MVP as a media extender too, why someone really wants a PC in the lounge when there's a purpose built box for doing so is beyond me. I realise that some have spare PC's etc but i'm getting too old for that, just give me the right solution in the first place!)

can i insert my dvd into a mvp?

does an mvp work flawlessly over a 54g wireless network with a below average signal?

what will the response time of the remote be like?

what about playing my divx files and dvd's

What if I want to leave my big noisy computer (in my study) off when we have guests and instead have my small & reasonably quiet pc in the sitting room, doing the work instead.

What about watching tv and recordings on my wireless laptop - it's got all the hardware it needs - should i have to buy more!

Exactly: my ideal network (11g wireless) is (or will be) set up as follows.

PC1: Sitting room - For email/browsing/recording TV (must be here as that's where cable box is & other half wont allow PC in our bedroom).

PC2 & PC3: Kid's rooms (these PC are already there & one is already connected to LCD TV/monitor)

MVP: Master bedroom.

Thus i'd like GB-PVR server on PC1 & clients on PC2&3.

Anyway, back to my question - anyone got a reliable "idiot's guide" to setting this up?

Neither will the PC if the wireless signal is an issue.

Yes you can watch divx via MVP and dvd's if you put them in the PC but like I said, I'm happy to use a DVD player.

Just open the mpeg file?

Yes I agree, it's just that some people seem to want to use a PC in this way when the MVP already offers what they want?

What functionality do you actually require from the client?

The latest enhanced webadmin allows you do schedule and watch recordings and videos and also watch a recording whilst it is being made (almost live tv if u like).

All from your browser..

please don't go to SageTV - have mercy on us poor humble folk...... :-)

Click on the button marked "Play recording"

The secret is to have VLC installed first, then it works just fine.

just install it on the client pc.

vlc is the only media player that will start playing the video immediately, without having to download the whole thing first.
