I've heard people prounounce this about five different ways (i.e. how-pawje, hop-idge, hap-oh-gie...). Anyway, from the horse's mouth:

How do you pronounce Hauppauge?
Hauppauge is a town in NY on Long Island. Hauppauge is pronounced HOP-HOG. The area around the headwaters of the Nissequogue (NISS-I-QUOG) River was dubbed Hauppauge by Native Americans; it means "overflowed land'' in the Algonquian language. Hauppauge boasts a large industrial park which is home to many well known companies.

The two ways I've heard it pronounced by Hauppauge staff are "horp-org" and "harp-arg". Oh and one person I know pronounces it "hopper-gee".

most people in the german speaking part of europe tend to pronounce it as it would be a german word... sort of 'how-pp-owghe' or something.
guess this is mostly because 'auge' means 'eye' in german.

There is another theory which states that this has already happened.

I've always said something like "harp-arg", but I've never been sure.

That's pretty much how I pronounce it - I did German at school and I assumed it was of German origin.

I always figured it was German, too, but I don't know German at all, so I used to pronounce it something like "haw-pawje".

NY has a lot of Dutch, German, and Native American names, so it could have been. But once a word becomes a city name, pronouciation is anything can happen day.
