Web Admin Setup Help!!!

Help! Am trying to implement the Web Admin, I followed all the instructions in the WIKI, am able to connect to Web Admin when I am logged on locally to my PC, but I can't access it from work. I forwarded ports 7647 (TCP and UDP) in both my router (Linksys WRT54G) and in ZoneAlarm Pro. Am using dyndns.org to work out my dynamic ip address yet still I can't access Web Admin. Am i missing something?

I just set mine up yesterday. I had to give my computer a static local ip to point the port forwarding to. Dunno if that'll help you, but it works fine for me.

yeah, wanted to do that but the Linksys WRT54G does not have a way to assign static addresses. But checked my PC IP address, it's the correct ip the port is forwarded to.

You don't have to get an address from your router, just configure a static address on the PC.

Another reason why it might not work from work is that the firewall there might not permit traffic outbound on the port that you have chosen.

If you don't have another service at home on port 80, you could change the gbpvr port to 80 and see if that works. Don't forget to forward port 80 too.

Yeah, I should have clarified. You have to go to Tcp/Ip properties for your LAN and specify which IP you want to give your computer (i think between .2 and .99 is good because DHCP starts at .100), as well as what the router's local IP is, and DNS server. I just went to the linksys FAQ section, typed in "open up port" and they have a brief tutorial on all things port forwarding.

To see if it is a port issue or a firewall issue, have you put this computer as teh DMZ yet to see if it can connect from the outside world? Also remember to make sure you have Windows Firewall Turned off, and also in troubleshooting stuff like this ALWAYS turn off ZoneAlarm and BlackIce and the such as they will give you fits.

the best way to troubleshoot this is to get a friend on the phone and have him try to login while you are at home. i would try the setup you have as-is which should tell you if you have a problem with your outbound work ports (which from my experience will be an issue).

i don't believe the stock WRT54G firmware allows you setup a static DHCP client table, so you will want to assign a static IP address to your GBPVR pc so that the port forward setting in the router is always valid.

i use multiple services requiring exposed ports (ftp, http, vnc, gbpvr, ...) so to get around having to find ports which are available at which ever remote location i am at, i use ssh tunnelling. this requires you to have an ssh server running on a pc in your network, with only the ssh port (default 22) forwarded to this pc from the router. then from a remote client pc you have to establish an ssh connection with this pc (ssh client i use is putty, tiny single .exe freeware download that you can get onto any pc) and configure the port tunnelling. i won't get into the ssh tunnelling details. a web search will glean you much info. if there is a wave of interest i can go into more detail.

this method has convenience advantages (only 1 fairly common port needs to be open at remote location) but also security advantages. only one internet facing port needs to be open on your router, ssh communications are encrypted therefore all tunnelled protocol communications are encrypted, any security-flakey client/server package becomes robust, only 1 server (the sshd) becomes critical to keep updated against latest attack methods, plus you can bore family and friends to death extolling the virtues of ssh tunnelling...
