In Config.xml the ShowChannelIcons flag is on.
<ShowChannelIcons>true</ShowChannelIcons>

Sub is really a genius. He has solved the mystery.
I had accidentally modified the <MiscMediaDirectory> setting in config.xml. It is restored to the original ".\media" setting. I'm enjoying the beautiful sight of the channel icons in the TV guide.
