GBPVRTray.exe constantly accessing network

Installed GBPVR09608.msi on 2/21/2006. Appears GBPVRTray is constantly accessing the network. The GB-PVR web server port is NOT enabled. EPG is not in middle of an update.

Why is the GBPVRTray doing this?

GBPVRTray.exe uses TCP/IP to talk to the recording service, but thats only the local machine. It does this every few seconds to check the current recording status.

I'm certainly appreciative of your wonderful program. I know it's a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. Well, at least blood and sweat. Yet, I was wondering if the TCP/IP method could be removed? The constant access makes it difficult to spot potential trojans or malicious programs. My i/o network traffic meter (on ZoneAlarm) is pulsing every second.

I noticed that this pulsing doesn't begin after bootup. It begins after starting the GB-PVR program and continues after exiting.

.Net Remoting, which uses TCP/IP behind the scenes, is pretty much the standard method for two .net apps on the same machine to communicate with each other, so no I wont be removing this. It is also the mechanism used by the GB-PVR client app (gbpvr.exe) to talk to the recording service.

In the last two years, no other users have indicated this has caused them a problem.

Understood. I'll find some other less annoying solution than ZoneAlarm to monitor my network traffic. Thanks.

I'd say that the error is Zonealarm since local loopback IP traffic actually generates NO wire traffic, it just goes down the stack to the IP layer and back up again.

If Zonealarm is indicating that there is, then clearly they're using erroneous methods to determine network traffic.

Maybe this is off topic, but do services like "Zap2It" get user statistics for TV shows watched and does GBPVR provide any statistics to these services? Not that I really care, I was just curious and always thought that is why I see traffic over WAN when using GBPVR. Maybe this is only the "loopback IP traffic" as mentioned previously.

No it doesnt. The only thing sent to zap2it is the date range, and the authenication tokens from your username/password.

I've noticed that with ZoneAlarm, if I run the GBPVR config utility then hit OK, the ZoneAlarm network monitor will start going. However, if I reboot the computer, ZoneAlarm returns back to normal. In both cases, GBPVR works fine. It's been a minor annoyance probably since the beginning of time (i.e. it's been this way for a long while), although I'm not sure why GBPVR only triggers ZoneAlarm's network monitor when OK is pressed on the Config utility and not on boot up.

I've noticed on mcafee firewall that on first run all 3 parts of gbpvr require network access - this is the recordingservice, the tray and the actual program itself
