Thank you guys for your previous assistance.

I am failing to get GBPVR to work well.
XP Pro SP2 Athlon XP 2400+ 512MB GeForce FX 5200 128MB FusionHDTV 5 USB Gold
HDTV OTA recording and watching are working.
Recording is sometimes jerky. I "think" it is using either the Microsoft MUX or a Cyberlink mux of VERSION: 4.0.1313 . I tried a 5.0.0727, but it appeared to be worse for some reason.
When I set the BDA Multiplexer to Microsoft DVRMS it seems to work the best for recorded DVR-MS files. At least they are less jerky. I don't have this problem or less witht he native Fusion HDTV app.
Conversion: doesn't do it well at all to MPG. It is either jerky or there is no sound.
Comclean: I've tried all of them from erik's site. It either doesn't work or I get a file with no audio.

Can someone puhleeze hold my hand (figuratively that is) to get this to work?

Thank you,
Greg

There might not be much that can be done. It sounds like lots of ATSC users have to use DVR-MS to get decent performance. Your machine isnt very high spec for HDTV, so I'd definitely try using the Overlay renderer since it takes a slightly lighter hit on the system. I'd also try using Zulu video decoder that was installed with the Fusion software.

ATSC support was only very lightly tested once, 8 months ago when it was initially added to GB-PVR. I'm not in a country with ATSC signals, so its only ever been something that 'kind of works', and has never had much focused development time.

sub,
Thank you for responding. Wellll...nertz! Figures there is a different way of doing the same thing in the US.
If I am understanding it right, GB-PBR only records ATSC in DVR-MS initially?
I can't set it to record straight to MPG? The Fusion app natively supports *.TP files which are HUGE. One hour of HDTV at 1080i is ~9GB in size.
Then they have a conversion utility to MPG that takes...well....forever! (so it seems).
It does have a record native MPEG that works fine. I have been able (just discovered it as a side benefit of my ultimate goal with erik's help) to run comskip separately on a MPG file and GB-PVR smoothly reads it and skips the commercials without having to enter Ctrl-P on the keyboard (kewl!). I haven't gotten to the remote control aspect yet!
So, what I would like to do with GB-PVR is record my ATSC and NTSC shows either straight to MPG (or other format my software player can recognize as well as my stand-alone DVD player) or convert smoothly to MPG and cut the stinking commercials out so I have a video file without commercials in it.

I did experiment with the renderers and there was some improvement on some GB-PVR recorded files using the overlay vs. VMR9.

How can I get a clean conversion from DVR-MS to MPG (or some other format but, preferably MPG)?

When I have tried to let GB-PVR do the automatic transcoding/conversion, the result seems even jerkier.
Will there be any further development on the ATSC side?
What do you suggest for the conversion? So far I keep running into a wall with comclean. mpgtx, mencoder, mpeg2schnitt either have jerky or out of sync audio, no output at all or no audio at all in the resulting file.
Haven't really tried cuttermaran as it seems more complicated to me at this time.
The DVRMSToolbox doesn't appear to work on XP Pro SP2. Just XP MCE.
AutoDVRConvert fails with not finding a third pin or something.

Do you ever bang your head on the 7th or 8th roadblock? grrr.

If you would like for me to send you DVR-MS files of ATSC recordings to stimulate ATSC development, I would be willing to assist.

Awaiting your reply to all the above.

Thanks,
Greg

No, thats not correct. GB-PVR basically has a separate audio and video stream which comes from your tuner device (via the demux) and it connects these to a third party mux filter, that is responsible for generating the resulting file. If you use the Microsoft DVR-MS mux, then it'll end up as a .DVR-MS file. If you use the Cyberlink or ShowShifter mux, then it'll end up as a .MPG file.

Yeah, thats the plan.

Yes, but it'll never have the same amount of attention as DVB or analog gets, since I'm not in a country that has ATSC.

You guys are in a much better position to answer this question. I know that when I did my initial development and testing of ATSC support I used the Cyberlink v5.0.1307 mux, and was recording directly to .MPG files without any problem, but admittedly this was only lightly tested. I also lightly tested the Microsoft DVR-MS mux for producing .DVR-MS files.

Ideally I would have hoped you could recording directly to .MPG using the Cyberlink mux. In theory you should also be able to convert from DVR-MS to MPG using the builtin conversion processing, which also uses the Cyberlink mux. I suspect the Cyberlink mux doesnt like glitches in the stream/signal, which maybe the reason you're having these problems.

If its not working smoothly, all I can really suggest is trying different versions of the mux and hope you find one that works well.
