MVP stuck 'loading application'

Hi,
I'm installing my first mediamvp and am stuck trying to get gbpvr to work with it. I've disabled the hauppauge services and set the number of mvp's to 1 in config. I have a router setup with dhcp. When I plug in the mvp, it stops at the msg 'loading application'. The gbpvr log shows the following:

mvp shows version 1.0
gbpvr is 0.98.8
mvp is connected over wifi and I do see a stable link.
The only thing I wondered about was the dhcp client lease. Seems it only gets a 1 minute lease. Tried 2 different dhcp servers with the same result so I'm assuming it's only requesting a short lease ..
Anyone able to offer any hints ?

Update: Can someone explain the interaction between the mvp and the server plz ? I ran a sniffer and all I see for gbpvr are a sequence of small UDP packets, one coming from the mvp that contains the string 'ongle.bin.o' and a 500 odd byte response .. this is a repeating sequence at a several second interval. If I sniff a connection to the actual mediamvp server, most of the traffic is TCP.

You should be able to configure your DHCP server to give whatever length of leave you want. I have mine set to an hour.

I have 2 options. My router and a Win2k server. The router (rtp300) allowed up to 9999 secs. When I use this with mvp server, I ended up with a 6 or so day lease. When I used gbpvr, it gave me a 1 minute lease.
With W2K I setup a reserved address for the mac address associated with the mvp. That didn't help. That's when I ran the sniffer. I can't figure out why gbpvr would be exchanging UDP packets while mediamvp server uses TCP. I can only assume I've got some 'orrible config problem or software clash ..

As far as i know GBPVR does not provide any kind of DHCP service. The allocation of an IP address is handled by the DHCP server (your router or win2k server).

How many bars do you get on MVPs initial screen. There should be five bars along the bottom of the screen, initially they're white and turn blue when each step is completed.

If i remember correctly the 2nd bar is for getting an IP address from DHCP, so if that turns blue you should be okay. After that the dongle.bin (the MVPs operating system) is sent to it via TFTP. Once it has that it should load up and try to contact a server (GBPVR).

I'm sure there is a better explanation somewhere of all the steps the MVP goes through to get connected.


Are you able to run the Hauppauge software for the MVP and get into some video files from your MVP?

The initially powered up, the MVP sends a few UDP broadcasts. These are used to get an IP address from a DHCP server on the network, and to download the dongle.bin from server. The dongle.bin is an linux operating system image file. After it has download it, it'll start running the MVP client, which sends one more UDP broadcast to locate the MVP servers. After that it uses TCP.

how do I figure out what version of dongle.bin I have ? The latest from Hauppage's site is 2.5_release23209 - it says it's Beta ..
Update: I confess I don't understand that sequence at all. If the dongle.bin is refreshed on each power sequence, then what convinces the MVP to offer an option to set host/IP if it doesn't already ? Does it do a firmware update ?

OK another update. I'm really stumped. When using gbpvr only, the mvp waits 9s between receiving a UDP packet from dongle.bin and requesting the next one .. This is why it seems to hang, dongle.bin is over 5500 packets .. meaning I can expect it to load in 13hrs ... I'd suspect the network except the only difference is whether I stop or start the mediamvp servers ...

The dongle.bin that was installed with gbpvr is 1730080 and was created 3/22/05 - After reading some posts that referred to gbmvp.bin as the correct binary for the mvp, I renamed that and replaced it with gbmvp.bin which is 1336864 ..

Greg, I stuck a table of dongle.bin versions here a while ago, but need to update it I think. At least it will give you an idea.
