Ok this is going to be a stupid question but here goes...

Is commercial skipping automatic or do you have to run the show analyzer program after show is recorded? In GBPVR config I have use Show Analyzer for Commercial Detection. Also use during recording instead of after. I have the paid for version.

I just got things setup today and I really like gbpvr. Nice work Sub! It's getting late so I guess I'll have to play tomorrow!

Show Analyzer has to have run first to create the data file that indicates the skip points. GBPVR can be configured to automatically skip these segments or you can manually skip over commercially by pressing play during a marked commercial segment.

I have gbpvr setup and working. I added a few plugins of interest too. I have a paid version of Show Analyzer installed also....

Are you saying that after a show is recorded, I have to start up Show Analyzer and point it to the the show I want commercial breaks detected?

I thought this part was somehow automated?

With the latest versions of gbpvr you can either configure (via the Config app) gbpvr to run ShowAnalyzer after a recording is complete (or during the show, I believe) or you can use the PostProcessing.bat file to run ShowAnalyzer or anything else. (Older versions of gbpvr will run comskip automatically, if there's no postprocessing.bat file and if comskip.exe is located in the gbpvr directory.) If you have a postprocessing.bat file gbpvr ignores your commercial detection settings and the comskip exe file and simply run that .bat file.

Because of gbpvr's early, special integration with comskip, ShowAnalyzer has a comskip proxy program that you can put in your gbpvr directory, which simply runs ShowAnalyzer using the comskip name.

Hope that helps,
Tim

To put it short, GB-PVR and SA do everything for you, you don't have to manually run SA, it's done automagically. Just be sure that GB-PVR is configured to run SA (either during or after) and configure SA so that it outputs ComSkip files.
When run directly through GB-PVR, GB passes on some additional info to SA as well (Show name, Channel name and Channel number) which you can use to set up different profiles according to your specific needs.

I have Show Analyzer set in gbpvr's config for commercial detection. I also have it set to process during the show. Last night I set gbpvr to record 2 shows. When I get home from work I'll check to see if Show Analyzer ran. The postprocessing.bat file is generated by? ShowAnalyzer?

It is included with SHow Analyzer? Sorry for sounding so pathetic but I didn't get to play with gbpvr and SA before going to bed last night...

Thanks Tim, things are starting to make more sense. I'm sure things will be clear as mud when I get to mess around with it after work!

PostProcessing.bat file is generated by you if you want to have it =) That is a bat file that is run after any recording is done. You can put anything in it, for example a call to comskip to run. If you have installed any plugins, I think some of them create a postprocessing.bat file for you.

GBPVR will run a file called comskip.exe in one of three cases.
1) is if you ask gbpvr to run it for you (in the config app)
2) is if you have not asked gbpvr to run it for you, but gbpvr finds it in the gbpvr directory. This will not happen, however, if you have a postprocessing.bat file (no matter what it contains)
3) if you have a postprocessing.bat file and in that one call comskip.exe

I don't know anything about showanalyzer and how you can run it, but if I understand mikaelgu correctly, showanalyzer will provide a "wrapper" for you. That is, it will give you file called comskip.exe, which will *not* run comskip, but instead run showanalyzer. This was done to "fool" gbpvr to run showanalyzer instead of comskip, in the old times when gbpvr didn't know anything about showanalyzer. Today I think it does know about SA (someone else must explain how it is done, though, I don't know), so this wrapper thingy should not be necessary anymore, I guess.

You don't need the postprocessing.bat file if you've setup ShowAnalyzer to run from the config application. Same thing with the ComSkip proxy, it isn't needed anymore. So with any luck, you won't need to look at the commercials on the 2 shows you recorded.

However, you may need to tweak SA for it to find the commercials in your region. The default should work fine for most US programming (I think), but it doesn't work at all here in Sweden. See the ShowAnalyzer forum for info on how to tweak your settings.

Thanks both to stefan and andlju for the wealth of information. Hopefully when I get home I will have 2 shows that are processed. I understand the tweaking issue I just browsed the Show Analyzer forums...

It looks like gbpvr and Show Analyzer are working together! I checked when I got home form work and both shows were processed. I didn't even have to press play during commercials. Automatically skipped right through them. Nice work...
