When I log off my Win XP account I get an error message as XP is logging off. The error message does not appear long enough for me to read it in full and it seems as if XP ignores it and continues to log off.

After seeing it many times I think it says something like "application failed to close" and "gbpvr.exe" is in the message.

This error message does not seem to affect any recordings scheduled after logging off, however this past Sunday I logged off in the middle of GBPVR recording a show, I got the error message, and when I played this recording last night about half way through the recording the recorded channel changed to a different channel. GBPVR did record for the full time however - just on two different channels.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks,
pneumoped

I think this has been mentioned recently. The GB-PVR Recording Service (which does run as a system service) spawns the MVP Server application as a user process (rather than a system service). The rec. service tracks the MVP server and, if it stops/crashes for what ever reason, it restarts it.

What you're seeing is the logoff process closing the MVP server then the rec. service trying to start it again (the rec. service obviously doesn't stop if you just logoff). The error you are seeing is windows reporting that the mvp server can't be started because the session is in a 'logging off' state.

I can't answer the channel change problem though. Does the change tie in with the time you logged off? If not then it suggests it's not related. You could try a test to see if you can reproduce it.

Cheers,
Brian

I can not be sure if the channel change corresponds to the same moment that I logged off. Will the GB logs tell me this?

I did run one test to see if I could reproduce the problem. I set up a manual 4 minute recording, waited for it to start and about 2 minutes into the recording I logged off and waited enough time for the recording to finish before logging back on and viewing it. GB recorded the proper channel all the way through for the proper time with no channel switching. However, every once in a while I do not get the error message I described above and this was one of those times.

I will try a series of similar tests when I get home from work and see what happens when the error message occurs and then report back.

NOTE: there is one other clue that may or may not have anything to do with this problem. I was having a different problem in which I had a 2 hour recording that overlapped with a 1 hour recording in which my two tuners should have captured both. However, when I had upgraded to the newest version of GBPVR I failed to set the two tuners to different board numbers (e.g. device #1 and device #2). So, half way through the two hour recording it would switch to the channel of the 1 hour program. Needless to say this confused the heck out of me for about 2 weeks until I found the solution here. But the fact that the recording changed channels in the middle of the recording is similar to problem above. During the test I described above, I left the two tuners both set to device #1 to see if that was the problem. In addition, I did not have a second recording scheduled that overlapped the problem recording described above. So, I'm inclined to think that solving my two tuners on the same device number problem does not have anything to do with the problem in this thread. Perhaps it is a clue that will trigger a thought by someone else.

Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Cheers,
Chris

Yeah, I get the same thing when logging off or shutting down. Something like "GBPVR.exe generates an exception that can't be handled".

I'm using a MediaMVP also.

Me Too, also with MVP. I just put it down to my PC being too slow to shut that down before WinXP itself closes.... :-)

This may not directly address your problem, but I also have a MediaMVP and when the server starts up, it sometimes places an extraneous startup window on the desktop. You can eliminate that by not allowing the "GB-PVR Recording Service" to interact with the desktop (Administrative Tools/Services, and right-click on the service). It might help the shutdown problem also.
