I noticed in playing w/ the 150 encoder settings that when GB uses it, it passes a different set of instructions (eg, default bitrate when not watching is 5000, but if I open the encoder settings while watching tv in GB, it is my 4300-5700 setting).

Where are those kept, and is it possible to pass other values?

I am specifically trying to make a change to the Luma setting in the Dynamic Noise tab stick. It is not available through the Hauppague Tweak tool (only accessable through it). I am able to change while viewing, but it is lost on channel change.

bitrate settings are stored by GBPVR in the direct.ini file. you can change the settings either under LiveTV or encoderpassthrough i believe depending on what you have specified in the "deinterlacing" section of the GBPVR config (last tab).

as far as the the denoise settings, i have found that they do stick if you close all tv apps and edit the PVR150 encoder settings through the e.g. tweak tool.

you can also find these settings in your registry under:

\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{some crazy string}\XXXX\DriverData

i left some of that registry location vague because i am not sure if it changes from installation to installation. i found this location by starting in the "class" branch and doing a search for "spatial".

I am able to change the bit rate etc, through the CP, and the spacital/temporal settings through the Tweak tool. Those are fine, and they stick.

Where I hit the problem is the luma setting that you can reach via the Tweak tool, by going to the 150/500 Advanced tab, selecting the card from the Encoder settings pull down, and clicking on the DNR tab.

I can change that setting w/ things open, closed, running, not running, etc, and while it keeps it for WinTV2k, it won't keep it past a channel change.

I did try it w/ everything closed, and it held it from setting w/ everything closed until I watched one channel then changed. It was gone after that. It's almost like it's resetting it after each use. Since it doesn't pass it (or passes some default), it just overwrites it on the next use.

I dont pass any Luma setting to the driver. In fact, I dont even have the ability to change this even if I wanted to. This information is private to Hauppauge.

I had a feeling that may be the case. I'm finding that setting doesn't persist pass reboot, even for WinTV.

Thx for letting me know the can/cannots.

i see your situation. i do find that mine stick though. i have mine set to non-default conditions and i have watched tv, etc and when i check them again they still hang in there. i haven't checked to see if *when* i am watching tv they move around, but i think you are saying that even if you change them, start GBPVR livetv, switch some channels, shut down GBPVR, check the encoder settings they have moved.

i did a quick search but couldn't find any reference to these settings in the windows registry. you could try using a tool such as regmon or filemon to try to determine where these settings are "stored" (or not in your case...).

I have played with the spatial and temporal adjustments using the tweak tool, and now can't seem to get rid of motion blur. I have not been able to find an explanation of exactly what these two filters actually do. Can anyone point me to a reference, or explain what these filters do at their extremes?

What are the default settings for spatial and temporal filters on the PVR150?

Thanks,
Roy

if you've got motion blur, likely you have the temporal mode set to static and a non-zero value set on the slider. you should be able to see what these filters do by bringing up this control while watching tv. switch the "spatial mode" to static and crank its slider, hit apply. you should see the picture become all "mottled". smooth but great loss of detail. set it back to 0. now do the same for temporal. you should now see a picture that looks fine if everything is stationary, but moving objects and pans have all kinds of tracer blur effect.

can't for the life of me remember exactly what the defaults are. may even be different from driver version to version. i find for a digital cable feed through svideo input that turning all this poo off gives me the best picture.

I think you'll find if you move (in my situation) that Lum high slider--in any combo of things open/closed/running, and restart, it will be changed.

It may not even last the setting, open GB, watch TV, back to guide, watch TV. Even if it does, it probably won't last a reboot.

Static/Temp change and stick just fine, because of the Tweak tool.

alright, i rarely reboot my HTPC so i'll give it a look. have you looked at ChrisTweak? it has controls for the luma/chroma thresholds and i imagine that if you launched it on startup it may set them to your preference upon bootup...
