I'd like to try something to save space (besides lowering the recording quality) and thought this may help. The program warns that it is "experimental" but does it still work for most people? Also, about what percentage would each file format lower the file size? How long would conversion take on a Pentium M 1.6 GHz?

Somewhat related: I used to download TV shows that would be about 370 MB per hour and would look slightly better than my 1.2 GB per hour recordings. How can I get results like those of the TV shows posted at Bit Torrent trackers?

It generally works pretty well these days.

You should really just try it. Go to the 'post processing' tab in the config app, and set to to convert ASAP to xvid, then record a short show. This will give you the opportunity to check out the size difference and how long it takes on your machine.

You'll find those shows are not using MPEG2. They'll be using xvid or similar.

So how do they record these shows? DVD recorder and then to xvid?

Alright, I set it to convert to Xvid but there was no ASAP option so I set it for 2AM - 9AM. I'll let you know how it works tommorow.

P.S. - I really appreciate all the help you've given me (and others). It's great that I can usually have a response to any question in 15 minutes or so.

There is an ASAP option. If you click the down arrow on the start time, its at the very end of the list.

Ah, then I'll know sooner (depending on conversion time).

If you haven't already, you may want to check out http://www.videohelp.com which has tutorials, tools, and guides for converting pretty much any format to anything.

http://www.doom9.org is another good site.

Just keep in mind that the Media MVP doesn't play xvid natively and you will find the playback to be substantially more troublesome on the MVP using that format. At least that's been the experience of most of us, ymmv.

Pardon the stupidity but what is Media MVP?
