The PVR350 hardware cannot play MP3 files itself, so GB-PVR uses you PCs default sound device to playback MP3 files. This default device is usually a soundcard or motherboard's onboard sound device.
To make this a little more seamless, many people connect the audio-out from their PVR350 to the line-in of the soundcard (and unmute the this input). They then connect the line out of the sound card to their TV or amp.
So yes, to play audio files with you PVR350 system you either need to have a motherboard with onboard sound (most do), or a separate sound card.
