hi. could some kind person tell me how to get 5.1 sound from DVDs and video files? right now i can only get my front 2 speakers and sub-woofer to work.

i'm using an Asus A8N-SLI Premium momboard which has a Realtek ALC850 8-channel CODEC. it also has S/PDIF out. i've connect it to my stero amp via the S/PDIF.

is there some confuration i need to do? answers or pointers to where to look would be much appreciated.

thanks!

does that method actually read the audio data from the DVDs or is it faking 5.1 by re-encoding things?

sorry if i'm not using the correct technical terms. from what i understand, dvds and hdtv broadcasts have 5.1 audio data in the streams already. we just need a way to read that data and send it to the audio equipment, right?

i'll give it a try now. thanks.

Not usre what the link that capone sent was, I take it you're wanting a 5.1 passthrough from your motherboard to you 5.1 receiver??

There were some threads around to explain it, things like cyberlink audio decoders etc. Have a search through the forums for SPDIF and you should find the information you're after.

sgilani, i have the purevideo decoder. could you possibly give an outline on how to set it up for 5.1? i'm tinkering with it and can't seem to get it to work. dvds and hdtv files are still playing on 2 speakers.

thanks!

ALl I know about the link I posted is that following it gives me 5.1 when the source has 5.1 (specific sound to each channel). MPEG decoders won't give you 5.1 if it's an AVI w/ 5.1. If you're only watching TV & DVD, then decoders only are fine

Using King's guide, I get great sound out of my 5.1 avi files. My regular TV viewing (stereo) just uses the front speakers (or maybe pushes the audio to all channels)

Purevideo decoders only work with MPEG2 files (so live TV and DVDs, but not any avi videos)

I'm assuming your 5.1 setup is correct; your sound card config software is set up correctly and the speakers are hooked up correctly and all that..

First you should enable all the settings pages. Go into the Registry Editor and navigate to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NVIDIA Corporation\Filters\Video]. Add a DWORD key called PureVideoPropPage, set it to 1. Add another DWORD key called EnablePropPage, set it to 1.

Run GBPVR, right click on the purevideo logo in the tray and choose Properties. You'll see an Audio tab, go there. Click on Speaker Setup.. Choose connected to a receiver and check "via an SPDIF cable". If its not working still, click on Advanced and try toggling the Method (Audio vs Data mode)

If it's still not working, I'm willing to bet your speaker setup or sound card settings are the culprit.
