Is GBPVR capable of capturing directly from the firewire port of a digital cable box or HDTV? As I understand it, the firewire port outputs the direct mpeg stream. Of course, only unencoded non-premium channels could be recorded.

Any plans to do so in the future?

I wont be personally adding this feature since its not something that is used in my country, so not practical for me to develop and test.

That said, there is nothing to stop some other developer adding support for this using a plugin.

. . . any new about this since you replied ?

It could be very practical for users in USA/Canada.

Bye!

No, nothing new. My view on it is still exactly the same as I've said above.

... Sub, can you explain us what would be needed to develope such plugin ?

Do you think GBPVR can uses already existing (hypothetical) command line
utility for recording ?

Thanks!

Some one writing this would need to provide a .NET 2.0 DLL with a class implementing the IRecordingSource interface. They would implement the StartRecording() method to do whatever interactions are required with the firewire connected box to start recording to a specified filename. They would also need to StopRecording() method.

This has been done by a couple of users in the past (dbox recorder plugin, software recorder plugin, external recorder). Source code to a couple of these is available on the wiki.

I think someone wrote an 'external recorder' plugin in the past, so maybe. I've never used it myself, so cant tell you anything about it.

. . . and how the TV Guide could be linked to recordings from the firewire device ?

I understand that no work is needed from this side, isn't ?
GBPVR already performs the glue between the TV listings, the capture device (whatever it is) and the channel changer (ir-blaster or any).

Very interesting ...

Another question: what happens when you have multiple devices regarding the TV-GUIDE ? Are channel displayed appearing in double in the guide ?

Thanks !

... I've not firured out yet if it will work with my
SA3250HD, but I look for using this software:

http://home.comcast.net/~brzez2/dctrecord.html

... unfortunately, the command-line version is only stoppable
on these criterias:
- limit of time
- limit of size

. . . which is not quite adapted to the External Recording Plugin, which needs
to call an executable in order to stop the stream.

Fortunately, sources of this software is provided and maybe it
could be transformed into a GBPVR plugin.

Bye!
