I know this probably has been brought up before but anyway..here goes.....

I have a media pc (windows 2000 server) with 2 pvr 150's, media mvp, and gb-pvr (recently downloaded). I am not having problems with system at all. Everything works great and I am completely pleased with it.

Yet, this is what I would like to do. I would like to access my media pc from outside my home. I have a linksys router over COX Cable. I have multiple workstations, all windows pc's and networked print server. I use DHCP on the work stations and NAT on the router. I have read where this is possible. I just can't seen to get it to work yet. My COX IP seems to be static and does not seem to change. I have opened up my WAN config on the router. But I still have not had any luck?

Does anyone have some expertise with this? I can really use your help? Thanks!

I have not tried this yet. I am really just trying to get help with accessing my network from an outside network. All the pc's on my internal network are able to access the media pc and login to GB-pvr.

then if you just want to access the computer itself, map 3389 on your router to your pvr box. this is assuming yuo will connect using M$ Remote Desktop. Another option is to use RealVNC. Lightweight less overhead solution. the default ports to that are 5900.

I setup a reserved ip (which is different than a static, a reserved does not have to be set at the machine) on my router and tied it to the MAC address of my GB-PVR and forwared port 3389 to it. This setup forwards all RDP (Remote Desktop Protocal) traffic to my GB-PVR system.

After that, I set up an account at http://www.dyndns.org If you choose the dyndns.org domain (there are other to choose from) then you can download a utililty that will update your dyndns account if your IP changes. (Very handy, seems to work great!)

After that I set my start page in Firefox to the webadmin. So now, I can hit my yournamehere.dyndns.org from an RDP session, log in, hit the Firefox button and I am in web admin. Works for me, simple and easy. I didn't want to deal with setting up apache, or run a webserver on my connection. I am paranoid enough about letting RDP traffic through.... LoL But from here I can also access the entire PVR machine, not to mention the rest of my network! Smile

The only downside is that I cannot use just a browser to get to my pvr, I must be somewhere that I can use the RDP client from. 95% of the time I am away, I have my laptop with me anyway.

well you can configure the web admin port in the config util and then forward that port from your router to the pvr pc. you can then access the web admin direct from your remote browser. remember to clear the autologin part of webadmin.

also, if you are behind a company firewall, ultravnc has a built in webserver that allows connections over http. if you forward your selected port to your pc and connect to mypc.dydns.org:portnum from your browser, it will launch an ultravnc applet in the browser. works fine for remote admin duties.

ged, not a bad idea, I kind of like the idea of using VNC over RDP as well... Smile

Might have to give that a whirl. Thanks!

A lot of routers have built in support for e.g. dyndns.org.
in my router it's under Applications.

i installed openssh server on my GBPVR pc, then i use putty to connect to it.
From within putty, i set up tunnels for any ports that i need.

i was also able to set up my work browser to use a Socks proxy on port 1080 so it accessed the internet via my home PC ! (this had the disadvantage of allowing me to access websites from work that would normally be firewalled).

Ok thanks all.

I was able to get it to work using the basic gb-pvr url from my IE browser outside my network (at work). I just mapped port 80 on my router (Linksys) to my gb-pvr port and it works.

Prior to this, I had this server only open on my network and not networked to the internet. I do have antivirus and firewall software on it and my firewall setting on the router are locked down pretty good. any othere suggestions?
