fps not detected correctly on avi files

I was having a problem that the comskip times were not picked up correctly when playing an AVI file. the files in question have been recorded by GBPVR and show the correct 25 fps when the mpg is played however after transcoding to AVI windows still reports the file as 25 fps and the file plays with the corect speed, but GBPVR sees the file as 30 fps causing the comskip frame numbers to be incorrect. I attached a log to illustrate what I mean.

If directshow cant determine the fps for an AVI file, then it returns the default 30fps.

I seem to remember someone did some research into it in the past and found that it always failed to determine the fps with deinterlaced AVI files. Sorry, I dont have any work around for this.

Well if AVI is a problem (by the way I thought I did not deinterlace them but will check) will GBPVR pick up any other transcoded file format MP4 ...?

Unfortunately it only tries to get the FPS from .mpg, .dvr-ms and .avi files. I dont know how to get the FPS from a .MP4 file.

I could be wrong on that front. I was just repeating another user's comment.

Its only some AVI files that have this problem. Some work fine.

I've been meaning to post about this, but I've been putting it off.

Before I do, though, can I ask what you used to transcode the file? ffmpeg? mencoder? Other?

I used both ffmpeg (with SUB's default settings) as well as mencoder with the same effect. The original mpeg is interlaced 25 fps. I do not deinterlace (as I still use a standard def TV set). When I check the file properties in windows it reports 25 fps. I have also explicitely put the 25 fps in the encoding options but this has all no effect. If you find any info elsewhere please post it.

I will check the deinterlaced video tomorrow.

Another option is to have a little command line calculator automatically multiplying the comskip frame numbers by 30/25 straight after transcoding this would "fix" the problem.

I decided to look into this today, but havnt been able to reproduce the problem. All the AVI files I have seem to correctly detect the FPS. I even tried using the transcode feature to convert an MPEG recording to .avi format.

Could you make a very small sample file available?

I discovered a few items which shed some more light on the issue. They have to do with the definition of the recordings directory.

When I redefined the video library from the unc path to the standard windows path I get no commercials at all in the first run and the correct commercials n the second run. In the logs I see that the first time around GBPVR detects 0 fps and the second time 25. The file use is the same as you have downloaded from my ftp. Playing this file from the UNC path gave me 30 fps.

There is however a bit more. I had the UNC path defined as //server/... this gave 30 fps. I now redefined it as \\server\... (the way it should be) and get first 0 and the second time 25 fps (I have reported this before). However when viewing the file from the recordings screen it says the file does not exist after transcoding when using the correct UNC path (I set to not autodelete in the config.xml since when the router reboots GBPVR was clearing the full database).

Further when I map the network path to a windows driveletter the recording service does not record anything (which is maybe normal).

I hope this sheds some light on where the issue lies.
