The reason I ask is that TinyXP rev 05 includes IE (a requirement for GBPVR?) and allows for SATA drives and WGA validation. The neat thing about TinyXp is this:

Quote:TinyXP Rev05 Statistics...

ISO Info...

ISO file size > 201Mb
ISO file size in bytes > 210,890,752
Files on ISO > 5,330
Folders on ISO > 176

Windows Performance Info...

Operating System RAM Memory Usage > 42Mb (± 3Mb)
WINDOWS folder > 397Mb
Running Processes on 1st install > 12
Install Time for Windows > 8 Minutes

Imagine how quickly GBPVR would function without all the normal XP overhead! I run GBPVR on a laptop, and I've been thinking about trying to set this up, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences to share before I took the plunge, as I would hate to lose my setup since the only way to install TinyXP is a boot clean install - no upgrade option.

If I don't get any replies by the weekend, I might give this a shot - if so I'll be sure to share my findings.

If you'd like to try it for yourself, here's a torrent link for you

I would be very interested to hear how this goes. It has always frustrated me that XP carries so much overhead that isn't needed in a HTPC application.

Good luck.

Don't forget you'll need .net 2.0.

I have one PC running rev. 02 & one running rev 03.
Something with rev 02 didn't jive with my PCI 6200 & e-machine MB so I had to go to 03.

Both are playback only though but I plan on testing rev 05 on my recording server.

It's actually pretty amazing. I think it makes XP liter than 2000

I do have a guide supposidly written by the person who created tinyXP.
Tells how he used Nlite to chop it down if anyone is interested I can post it.
Then you can use your own copy of xp if your concerned with downloading it.

I havn't verified it in any way though.

I'd be interested. I have an old 700 mhz P3 sitting around that may be able to decode mpeg2's if it wasn't for the bulky OS.

I'd say it probably could with a 6200.
I had an fx5200 in a Athlon 750 mhz setup & it played DVD's, .avi's , & half DVD mpegs perfectly at about %65 to %85 cpu.
A little on the high side, but it worked.
It did however tank on the 6000 b/s recordings I made of movies.
But then who needs that high a quality for non- HD.

My celeron 1.1 on an e-machine & the 6200 decode like a champ.

Here is what I found.
Someone let me know if they do this.
=================================================================================

eXPerience Presents...

Guide to making your own TinyXP completely from scratch
using your own Windows XP Professional Corporate and nLite.

=================================================================================

nLite is currently @ v1.0 RC7

To download the nLite installer, which is
only 1.45 Mb, visit the following url:

http://www.nliteos.com/download.html

To use nLite, you will need the Microsoft
.NET Framework v2.0. If you do not have this
installed under "Add or Remove Programs" in
"Control Panel" then you can download the .NET
Framework here (copy this entire line, it is
a MASSIVE url!)

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/info....yLang%3den

OR you can go here and search for the .NET Framework v2.0...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/resul...layLang=en

=================================================================================

With nLite installed, you can now copy your XP CD to your hard disk drive.

make a folder anywhere you want and call it: XPCD

Copy all the files and folders from your Windows XP CD (I386 etc) to
the XPCD folder.

=================================================================================

After that, you can add Service Pack 2, Hotfixes etc in seperate folders,
but this guide will not get into all that. If you need SP2 integrating and
hotfixes, search that same Windows downloads website...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/resul...layLang=en

...for all the post SP2 KBxxxxxx hotfixes and Service Pack 2 (hotfix KB835935),
then in nLite, you only have to point nLite to these hotfixes, and SP2 if you
need that integrating too.

In case you need those KB numbers to search, here are all the
critical post SP2 hotfixes you should integrate...

KB835935 (Service Pack 2)

KB905915 KB893803 KB873333 KB873339 KB883939 KB884020 KB885222 KB885250
KB885835 KB885836 KB886185 KB886677 KB886716 KB887472 KB887742 KB887797
KB888113 KB888240 KB888302 KB889527 KB890046 KB890175 KB890859 KB891781
KB893066 KB893086 KB893357 KB893756 KB894391 KB894395 KB896344 KB896358
KB896422 KB896423 KB896424 KB896427 KB896428 KB896626 KB898461 KB898900
KB899587 KB899589 KB899591 KB900725 KB900930 KB901017 KB901190 KB901214
KB902400 KB903234 KB904706 KB905414 KB905749 KB905915 KB908519 KB908521
KB908531 KB910437 KB911562 KB911927 KB912812 KB912919 KB913446

=================================================================================

Once XP Service Pack 2 (WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) is integrated
and all the hotfixes you want, you can use the "Last Sessions.ini"
file to remove all the components in the jpeg image "TinyXP.jpg" provided
here.

You can have a good look at this list if you want, or just trust that it
will work and import the Last Sessions.ini file into nLite... yes, it is
that easy! Then what you have is, TinyXP.

NOTE: The ticked boxes in TinyXP.jpg is exactly
what the Last Sessions file removes and keeps.

You MUST not make the mistake of telling nLite to again incorporate the Service
Pack and hotfixes, so if you did do this, you should really just delete the ini
files that nLite puts in your XPCD folder the first time round. Ignore this if
you have not put a service pack in, because then you will not have any Last
Sessions present anyway. Just overwrite any existing Last Sessions, making sure
you IMPORT the one provided with this guide, overwriting the "preset" if there
is one.

Now - all you need to do is tick Next, Yes, OK, Yes, Next, etc etc and nLite
will start the removal process.

If you don't like a particular setting, you can crawl through these screens
in nLite if you want to make it customized, but this Last Sessions is the
TinyXP Last Sessions INI file! It is supposed to be a universally usable XP
bloatware fixer!

As nLite goes through each screen you can see what is going to be removed
just as you can in the included TinyXP image and change anything you want.

=================================================================================

NOTE: To use this with XP Home or Professional that NEEDS TO BE ACTIVATED
then you must untick the "Out of Box Experience (OOBE)" in nLite, this
is under "Operating System Options". Or if you want, delete the line
in the Last Sessions file...

"Out of Box Experience (OOBE)" is on line 94 in the last sessions file,
delete it if you're using XP that needs activating! OK this is so
important so again...

If you run a non Corporate (non VLK) version of XP that needs activating,
then removing the OOBE will mean you CANNOT ACTIVATE! I have warned you!

=================================================================================

Registry Tweaks - for the ultimate in customisation I have included a regirsry
file, "TinyXP.reg". You can use this as default, or you can crawl through the file
and copy & paste any tweak you desire. nLite has a built in registry tweak GUI,
so with that you can do most of what is in the registry file TinyXP.reg, but
with that reg file you can open it with notepad and take any tweak out.

*When editing reg files, always put this line once at the top of
the text file - NOT at the top of every tweak:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

*and a RETURN after the last line of text in the reg file too.

=================================================================================

To make your XP unattended - use nLite, that will make windows unattended,
you only have to choose the option to do this in nLite.

Once thats done, you will have a folder inside XPCD called: $OEM$

Go inside that folder and you should see a file called: cmdlines.txt

If it isnt there, or the distribution folder $OEM$ is not there,
create the folder so you have: XPCD\$OEM$ and create the text file
cmdlines.txt so then you have: XPCD\$OEM$\cmdlines.txt

Now, in cmdlines.txt, copy this code and paste into cmdlines.txt:

[Commands]
"REGEDIT /S TinyXP.reg"

NOTE: If nLite has already put tweaks in, you will see the line:

"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,nLiteReg"

DO NOT DELETE this line!

Just make it like so:

[Commands]
"rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection nLite.inf,nLiteReg"
"REGEDIT /S TinyXP.reg"

Now, copy TinyXP.reg from this guide folder to the following:

XPCD\$OEM$\TinyXP.reg

So it is now with cmdlines.txt in $OEM$

=================================================================================

With that done, you now should have XP with SP2, hotfixes, stripped, with
the TinyXP registry tweaks and an unattended install.

=================================================================================

If for any reason you cannot put your serial key in for the unattended,
but you do have a serial key to use, I have provided the file winnt.sif,
but you do not actually need to use this unless you are having problems.

Open winnt.sif with notepad, then scroll down to the following info:

[UserData]
ProductKey=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
FullName="UserName"
OrgName="Home"
ComputerName=USER1

Here you put in your 25 digit product key and User name,
Organisation name and the computer name. Leave as they
are if you want and just put your own product key in, make
sure to include-the-dashes between the XXXXX's.

=================================================================================

With all that done, you can make a bootable ISO (that you can then burn to a CD)
by simply telling nLite to "create a Bootable ISO". It is called "Winlite" by
default but you can label it TinyXP if you want to Wink

=================================================================================

Now burn the ISO and enjoy Windows that is very fast, has all hardware support,
all languages, but is only 160Mb in size!

Thanks for the tip on tinyxp. I haven't tried it on my GBpvr machine but it cleaned up my 4 year old laptop and makes it run like a champ. I only use it for email, browsing, spreadsheets and my daughter watches videos/tv shows on it when we're travelling.

I had installed a fresh version of windows only a couple weeks ago but, using tinyxp really seems to make a difference. When I get time I will install GBpvr on this machine and see how it works.

Folks, on this subject, I'm running my GBPVR machine on VMware machine

I've had to build a release per release of sub's so I'm not moving between images as often as I should..but I'm got great stablility of the machine etc.

My GBPVR Database and Videos are of course on the harddisk and VMware machine points to their locations but upgrading etc is a dream....

My capture card is connected via USB and it all works fine. I've mostly used this machine for testing my CLT tool so I can get a clean working machine in about 4 minutes.....
