I did not see this documented elsewhere, but if you are using Windows MCE 2005 with GBPVR, you need to disable the Media Center Receiver Service.

This can be done from the Administrative Tools | Computer Management control panel applet.

I changed the service startup option from Automatic to Manual. After that, manually stop the service or reboot.

After this is turned off, you will not be able to use MCE to receive TV -- but you WILL be able to use GBPVR.

I did not see this documented in the wiki, and I spent may fruitless hours trying to make this work.

Thanks to sub, who responded to my troubles in a different thread that pointed the way to a solution. Would like to see this documented in the wiki though...

In my case, I turned off all the Media Center services -- MCE can still be used to browse recordings, music, pictures, etc.

So do I understand this correctly, that GBPVR can't be used exclusively to record, say digital cable QAM from my HDTV tuner, while MCE handles the NTSC tuner?

This would be very desirable, and I would love it if we could get support for this. The reason we need this is that MCE doesn't support cable QAM, but GBPVR does.

Thanks,
Jeff

There is no problems telling GB-PVR to use only your digital cable QAM from your HDTV tuner. GB-PVR will happily co-exist with other apps that use TV cards, as long as the other apps are able to free up access to the device when it is not in use.

I have no idea whether MCE will be as willing to co-exist with other apps though. This isnt a GB-PVR problem though. If you find MCE is holding on to the resources for your HDTV tuner, then you'll need to go hunting on the various MCE forums looking for info on getting it to ignore a specific tuner etc.
