All my files are in MPEG - do I have to use the 'scheduled conversion' utility in Processing to change the format to XVID or can GBPVR do it file by file?

Would take ages to do it in one go....

use the video library and the Transcode buttons in there to do on a file by file basis... plus you can select different profile for each file...

i use the profiles to add to a que, to burn to dvd with showburner..Big Grin

which produced an .avil file about less than a quarter of the file size of the original - and the quality had really gone off.

Any ideas?

adjust the parameters in config.xml to your taste...
check the ffmpeg manual page..
http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/ffmpeg-doc.html

or insert your own favorite compressor into the config.xml..Smile
[now possible]

This is a common complaint. FFmpeg, the program that ships with GB-PVR that does the actual transcoding, really doesn't do a great job of MPEG to AVI.

You can increase the bitrate, and set it to two pass, and it still doesn't do a great job. Instead you end up with a file, that nears the size of the original that still doesn't look as good as the stuff you might get from online...

I have used autogk to do my converting.

If backing up and cleaning up your Hard drive is what you're after you might consider not even transcoding them to avis, but rather burning them onto DVD.

I hear Showburner does a good job of that...

IMHO

to burn to DVD using my videos....

My DVD's though are out of synch, and we think it's due to FFMPEG. Therefore it was suggested to me that I try burning the files from a diffferent format.

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to be happy either!

Try this one: http://ffmpeg.mplayerhq.hu/

I would suggest that you don't want to go from mpeg to avi to mpeg (DVD)...

Sync can be a symptom of other things... Sounds like pbs's department
