the icon that displays whether something is recording or not (changes between green and red) has no name. Now whilst this is sad purely on the basis of little notification icon itself which I'm sure must be getting teased by all the other notification icons it also screws up windows. I have my icons auto-hide, but i don't want little no-namey to auto-hide. Normally I could right click on the task bar, click on properties and then customise. This works, but no-namey keeps on loosing its special non-auto-hide ability. I'm thinking this is because it has no name; possibly all the other icons are stealing its special ability from it. So please, give no-namey a name.

Possible names include:
1.gbpvr recorder icon
2.gbpvr
3.timothy
4.theiconformallyknownasthaticonwithoutaname

To be quite honest, I'm thinking about removing the icon all together. Its caused me noting but grief. Its relatively straight forward for regular windows programs to place icons in the system tray. When you try to do it from a service that runs as a different user account, there some funny limitations, and it only shows up on the first user to login (which is annoying with XP fast user switching).

If the recording service is run as a regular process, and not as a service, then it nicely shows the name of what its recording when you hover over the icon.

Most developers recommend not interacting with the desktop in any way from a services, instead recommending running a small windows program when the user logs in, which is responsible for asking the service "what is going on" and updating the tray icon appropriately. The idea of developing a new program just for updating the tray icon doesn't really enthuse me...

I'd really like to keep some sort of notification of some kind - especially if it could have the hover ability you described.. maybe something to add to the list between .3 and 1.0?

i think you should remove the icon or at least add an option in config to remove it, theres really no need for it, well if you have a htpc fully setup just running gbpvr.

question (sorry for stealing ur thread fini) im getting my vfd(lcd thingy) in a couple of weeks (had to wait for it to get into the county) and i was just wondering if by default (or via a plugin) if gbpvr displayed the recording status? like a timer and channel number etc.

Sub,

if the icon notification is going to cause you grief, then drop it. If someone here can write the middleman application they pass it off to them.

I would put this down as if before you release version 1.0 and fancy adding something like this, do it then,

Cheers,
Colin.

Pitty. It shows me in a blink of an eye if recordings are in progress and if I can restart my PC or not.
