I have been using GBPVR for about a month now and it is working great. Thanks SUB for providing such a great program. My question has to do with security software. When I installed GBPVR on my computer, I did a clean install of my entire system. My computer is solely dedicated to GBPVR. I do not use the computer for surfing the internet (except for windows updates and ZAP2IT updates). I have a netgear router with a firewall and I have service pack 2 which also includes a mediocre firewall. Do I need to install any other security software?

Thanks

If its a dedicated machine, where you're not surfing the net or reading emails etc, then I think you'd probably be fine with the router firewall and Windows firewall.

Since you don't use the box for anything else, I would say load it with extra security since it won't interfere with you.

First disable the Messenger Service if it's running to keep any annoying popups from showing up: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using...pspam.mspx

Next install a software firewall that restricts everything except for the EPG updates and whatever else you need it for. If the machine is on the same router as you it could still be used as an entry point to your network.

This way you have a tight, secure box that can focus on running the GBPVR.

I am kinda with Sub on this one... why install all that stuff ... thats just bloat and extra cpu cycles for no reason ... kinda like a vault for some good cookies... I dont install anything... and I only use FF when I download windows/epg updates...

unless of course I missed your sarcasm Smile

If you share the whole system drive locally, you could always include the share in your regular antivirus and antispyware runs from your main machine?

This is a misconception.

All these window dressings will provide is a false sense of security.

I think it would be better than just windows firewall.

What more would you add on for XP?

The fundamentals of security for a windows desktop.

Keep applications and Windows itself up to date, disable unnecessary services, use common sense in what you install will go a long way.

A good upstream firewall is also essential. That is where you would want to put the most of your paranoia. If you really want the machine to be secure you can limit the type of traffic that is allowed to head for that box.

"Firewalls" you install on the machine itself are just a "bandaid" and a waste of cycles.
