I have done some forum searching and it sounds like some have had success with streaming over wirelessG. I thought i would pose this question to hear how/if people have had success with streaming over wireless g. I would love to be able to stream livetv (HD OTA) to a laptop wirelessly so that the tuner did not have to travel around the house with the laptop (or should I say the wife would like it Wink). I have a server setup that has been doing a good job recording for me and streams recorded video fine to my client wirelessly, but not livetv. In streaming livetv I have tried the following muxes with these results:

Microsoft dvr-ms: used file sharing, got "ERROR: failure playing back file", sub think this might be a drm issue

Cyberlink: used streaming, very choppy

ATI MPEG mux: used streaming, choppy...this was my best result but still not watchable

Intervideo: I don't have this mux installed.

SS: used streaming, very very choppy, what is SS?

TS mux: installed the hdtvpump, used streaming, worked on a different client (wired) but not on my wireless client.

Transport Stream: used streaming, caused the client to hicup back to the main gbpvr screen

One other question...when i pause during the livetv stream, and then play again, i get a few seconds of clean playback and then the choppiness begins again. The short period of time does not seem to correlate to how long I have paused.

One other note...I have tried the EWA plugin, and though it is nice, I would prefer to stream without it (it appears like it is designed with the intention of streaming over internet and not high quality over ethernet) and hopefully get HD over wirelessG.

Any success stories would be great to hear with details on how you were successful.

One other thing...I am able to stream Livetv without choppy video to this client when it is wired (100 mbs).

Edit: In retrospect I do not think I was actually able to stream livetv wired or wireless that was not choppy...don't know what I was thinking on this post.

It sounds like you're just not getting enough bandwidth to do this when running wireless then.

Have you heard of anyone who has had success on 54mbps? I guess I am wondering if there is something about my ap that i can tweak to improve streaming performance.

I've not heard much at all about people using it wireless - even standard definition. HDTV would have even hit bandwidth requirements.

Is there alot of overhead in the transmission of livetv versus playing a recording?

There is a fair bit more network activity when watching live tv, since its continually having to scan the end of the stream checking the new duration of the video.

Would changing bitrates in the direct.ini file help? If it would I am assuming one would change the server's direct.ini?

I can tell you that I use 2 wireless G clients for standard def TV. I use 6 mbit (variable with max 9 mbit) and can stream to both clients at the same time without the slightest hickup. The network can do between 20 and 24 mbps when I just copy a large file. Maybe test the bandwith this way and see whether your stream will fit.

I did try to stream to a neighbour who has a lower quality connection to my router. On this machine I get a simple file troughput af 8 to 10 mbps which showed not to be good enough for streaming. So I guess the max troughput of the network needs to be well above the bitrate which might make HD a stretch for wireless G.

This would only help with analog cards like the PVR150 etc. With OTA HD the bitrate is decided by the broadcaster.
