i restarted the computer and restart the MVP and it says

1.contacting the mediaMVp boot server

then,

2. Contacting DHCP server

then back to step one in a loop
and get no further,
just back and forthe between the two.

I have no idea if I have a hardware problem now, so Im just tyring to get stock MVP software working first, but no luck. Was running fine, then had some computer changes, but service running, firewall off, router fine.

You have number of mvp-servers set to 1, in gbpvr-config-mvp?
Do you have a dhcp-server running on the router, i.e. does your server get an ip-nr automatically?

I've reduced it back to just stock mediamvp software to try and troubleshoot..

This happens with even the factory mvp s/w..

Are you sure your firewall is off, I've been "surprised" by windows-update turning it on, or by changing network-settings.:o
When you try the hauppauge sw, do you have gbpvrrecordingservice turned off?

I uninstalled gbv while trying to get it working, so only have mediamvp services in there. Unistalled zonealarm firewall as well, and reisntalled, and windows firewall is off.

We know cable is good as it checks connectivity, and was working for years.

Yes, rebooted and reset router.

Did you unplug the mvp or just turn it on again?

Well only thing I can think of now is this: did you read the wiki:
http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/MVP#toc2
I would try another network cable just to rule it out.
 :o
