I recently installed WinFF to do some batch conversion of mpg files... and now that they're converted, they won't play through gbpvr, though they do work in vlc.

The only difference in the ffmpeg command line between the standard GBPVR version and the WinFF version was the absence of the -vtag argument. The version of ffmpeg used was the one bundled with WinFF, rather than the one bundled with GBPVR.

How important is the -vtag argument, and how can I incorporate it into the compressed files without recompressing them?

And are there compatibility issues caused by using different ffmpeg.exe files? How to overcome them?

No. WMP claims it can't find the codec... which makes me wonder if the different ffmpeg.exe files embed codec info in different formats or something like that.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Li...c_Pack.htm Get that, no more codec problems, ever Smile

I use that on my video editing machines and GBPVR machine at a minimum.

Also, whatever WMP plays will work in GBPVR, whatever it doesn't... won't.

Installing the codec pack does change all sorts of behavior. Some files that wouldn't play now will. Sound is gone in .mpg files now, but mp3 sound in avis works fine.

Some avis now have the problem where the video whips past at 60x speed while the sound proceeds at the normal pace, so you see a fast forward in a minute, and then listen to it for an hour.

Suboptimal... but better than unable to render at all.

Will have to try encoding some stuff with the new codec installation and see how that goes.

When you tried to transcode the files to MPG originally, what codecs did you choose? mpeg2video, mp2 audio, what bitrates did you use...

What does gspot say about the files...

You could try this version with less stuff.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Code...l_in_1.htm

It's very weird to me that it broke anything. If you want to send me a clip from the mpg file let me know and I'll give you a place to upload it and i'll take a look.

I use the same codec as above pack with the extension of Quicktime Alternative and Realtime Alternative called K-Lite Mega Codec and I have never had any problem of that type you pvrtinkerer describe.

One way to avoid such problem are to make sure that old codec are removed. Normal procedure are to stop and reboot computer before you use "add and remove programs" in windows (you find it in Control Panel), so you can be sure that you have no media file active in the back ground while you are deleting old codec package. If you later use the same codec pack (K-Lite Mega Codec pack) you will be prompted if you need to delete/remove old codec pack before you update package. It can be wise to stay on one codec package and learn how to tweak it as this package also can use XviD or CoreAAC if the basic FFDSHOW (libavcodec - codec library for video and audio) doesn't fit your need.

I will suggest you to also add tools when you install this package or you could find those on http://www.free-codecs.com split up in different offering as Gspot, GraphEdit and Xvid statsreader among other tool that come in K-Lite Mega codec package.

Use GraphEdit to see how your file are rendered. It will let you see what directshow filter that are in use when you run that file that didn't have sound. You can enable or disable codec in FFDSHOW both for what codec are used for sound and for video.

You are not very clear about what your end result are except for AVI as in container format for transcode. What codec are sound and video after you have transcoded to AVI?

AutoGordianKnot can do much the same as winFF seem to do which is to collect a batch of files and then transcode into different media format for different type of codecs and containers. Try it out! Their homepage have very good tutorial for how to use it and what the different setting will mean.

Original mpgs were either 480x480 vbr ~6kkbps or 720x480 vbr ~8kkbps, with 224kbps 48khz sound.

Transcoding was done with WinFF, set to use xvid with ac3 sound @ 1250kpbs video, 160 kbps audio. Codecs were not specifically selected if there were multiple instances of xvid installed. (Which leads to the question whether xvid codec is compiled into ffmpeg, or whether it uses installed codecs it finds... that is unclear.) The instance of ffmpeg used was WinFF's, not GBPVR's, which appear to be slightly different, as WinFF's reports being 6.18MB, while GBPVR's reports being 6.17MB... different compile options, I'm guessing, (which might be the source of the problem?)
