I've just about got my HTPC the way I like it. The only thing i've found that doesn't quite look right is the scrolling text at the bottom of the screen. Like you would see at the bottom of ESPN. It's just a little blurry as it goes by. Anyone have any suggestions?

GBPVR 99.12
160x2 hard drives
Nvidia video decoder

Anything else you need to know about my box?

sounds like a de-interlacing problem. Are you using a CRT or LCD/Plasma screen?

What TV source / capture card are you using?

What graphics card are you using?

If you have a CRT, in config.exe, access the purevideo settings and make sure that you set "content default" to "film" and "display fields separately". This will ensure that decoder passed does not deinterlace or resize the image.

Nothing wrong with CRT - In fact for analogue reception, I believe a CRT is better than LCD.

I think that want to make sure that no de-interlacing takes place although IIRC CSY (a forum member here) believes that full hardware de-interlacing is better.

Try what I said above and also in the ATI control centre, set deinterlacing to weave (none)

Also check out these threads. It can be a complex topic (well I thought so anyway)!

Thanks. I'll run through these little fixes and see if they help the problem. I'll post back later with my results for future reference.

Maybe i'm just dense, but could you go step by step on how to change the "content default" to "film" and "display fields separately". I see where is says content default, but that's it...the little bubble that has anamorphic in the same group.

Am I in the right place?

humm not sure. I suspect you have clicked on the nvidia logo when watching a video?

try this:

run gbpvr's config.exe

click playback tab
click video decoder settings

on video tab you should have a de-interlace and de-interlace mode settings.

actually mine appears to be set to film and "best available" - oh well.

also make sure that :-

display type is set to anamorphic/raw
hardware acceleration is on
and prefer vmr9

TBH: I am probably not the best person to advise on the what the correct settings should be; I just picked up this info from the threads mentioned earlier.

So I finally get to post some good results. I really don't know what fixed the problem completely. But here is what it might be.

To start with I completely reinstalled my OS for other reasons. Upon reloading GBPVR I still had the problems with the blurry text on ESPN. So I decided to try SageTV or BeyondTV to see if they were any better. Unfortunately they weren't. I was having other problems with GBPVR so I reinstalled it again. This time, miracously, the blurry scrolling text was gone with the system default video codecs. So I tried changing to the Nvidia codecs. Still no blurry text. The only way I could reproduce the blurry text was changing the deinterlacing options on the MISC tab of the config program away from Encoder passthrough.

So that's my story and i'm sticking to it. I have no idea what these results mean, but maybe someone else can explain for future generations.

glad you got it sorted.

did you have your decoder set to default before you reinstalled? If so, your recent actions have probably resulted in the decoder you are using being changed. Mabye reinstalling the OS removed a poorly performing codec.

you probably already know this but by default, the purevideo decoder pops up a logo on the bottom right of the picture during startup (you can click on this if you are quick to access the decoder properties).

My only thought is that it might have been something screwy with the decoders. Oh well, it's fixed now and i'm happy for it.
