I wonder if its possible to watch other types of videoformats on GBPVR than the standard format GBPVR uses to record TV. I try to play AVI, MOV, WMF and DivX compressed files without much luck.

I use version 99.12 with a Hauppauge 350 card.

you can only watch mpg files via the tv out on the 350. If you want to watch avi files you need to transcode them into mpg in realtime. Sorry, I don;t know if there is anyone here that does this or how it is done.

the tv out on the 350 is no longer supported due to bugs in the driver that cause the card to hang for many users. It is supported as a tv tuner device.

I would advise you to consider connecting to your tv via your graphics card and installing an mpg decoder instead. You can do so much more with this setup.

That sounds like a sound advice. I have to try with the graphics card then. Is there any secrets getting this to work? Is it standard setup in Windows that is the solution? How do I set up the mpg decoder?

Basically, once the video out is set up to use your graphics card anything that plays in Windows Media Player will play on through the GBpvr menus.

You will have to install compatible codecs for the types of video you are playing. Divx or xvid will take care of the .avi files. I would think that the Hauppauge software would have installed an mpeg codec. Can you watch videos using the WinTV2000 program?

I have a Hauppauge 150 and I watch all ofthe file types you mention without issues since day one; in fact 95% OF MY FILES ARE DivX/XviD avis and MKV files andIwatch them without transcoding anything.

The issue here is not hardware but software, specifically codecs. Google "Combined Communit Codec Pack" and install it. That should take care of most of your problems. I use the old (no longr supported tragically) "My Videos" plugin with the optio of using an external player and watch my DivX/AC3 vids in full 5.1 glory using the freeware GOM player (Google is your friend....) and I have yet to find a format I can't view with this combination in GBPVR.

Hope this is helpful, reply if you need more info.

WTF is KAA? Does it have anything to do with attitude adjustment? Wink The MKV files I wath are primarily Fan Subs of current Japanese Anime, not that I owe you any explanation.

The subject was that the OP claimed he/she could not watch any other format other than the one native to GBPVR recordings. The quote was, "I try to play AVI, MOV, WMF and DivX compressed files without much luck."

Sending them off on a HW hunt without first ensuring that that they had the proper codecs installed seems more 'off the subject' to me. I am trying to help this person out; I really don't understand your attitude.

the OP has a PVR-350 and so my initial guess as to why he couldn't watch avi's was because he was using the tv output on the card, which is unique to this model (and therefore hardware related)

If this was the OP's problem (and it sounded like it was), then as stated, the next job is to ensure he has all the necessary codecs installed, although installing every codec every invented isn;t always the best way of doing this.

As mentioned the OP also required a good mpg decoder to playback his recordings. as suggested, the supplied Haupaggue one is a good starting point.

Finally, the type of graphics card used can have a big impact on tv picture quality.

Kaizen: I think you mis-interpreted Ted's comment. He was aiming it at himself, not you.

Hmmm, I didn't read all that into the OP's ...well OP Smile

He simply stated that he tried "to play AVI, MOV, WMF and DivX compressed files without much luck." which still sounds like a codec issue to me, though I now wonder how he defines "without much luck"...nothing happens, errors, video but no sound, choppy, etc?? I guess we'll have to wait for him to elucidate.

Regarding Ted, I am still waiting for an explanation for the "cccp Smile and you watch MKVs, yeah someone likes KAA :p " comment.

I'll have to agree with gEd, his problem is that the PVR350's tv out can only be used for MPEG1 + MPEG2 playback. No codecs or decoders come into the equation when you're using the PVR350 tv out - since all the decoding is done in hardware.
