Hi,

I use GBPVR/Hauppauge PVR150 for recording TV, and XBMC for playback.
I'm using 'high qualith mode' for recording.

When viewing 'fast' action, like ice skating, or dancing, I notice a significant lower quality in the recording, compared to the 'original' broadcast. The movements are a bit jerky.

Is this a limitation of the PVR150, the MPeg2 recording, the quality setting, or, am I doing something wrong?

I don't think the xbox is the limitation, because all other media is played without a hitch.

mpeg2's fault...it's not the greatest at adjusting bitrate for fast motion..
[that and the buffer size limits the range of adjustability]

one thing you cna try, it adjust the 'high' settings config to be 'vbr' or variable bitrate and giving a higher top end bitrate and around the same as 'high' for the low end....like say 5500 to 9800/12000 for range..
not sure it will help tho..but let us know if it does...Smile

I watch a lot of F1 - increasing the bit rate is the way forward...

So, to fix this I need a card with a better encoder/better protocol?
Are there affordable alternatives?

no just up the bit rate in recording settings
medium is the default setting
down the bottom when adding a tuner in config

edit sorry just read that again
it maybe the way your playing it back
im sure if you are using the highest setting it should be fine i have pvr500 and pvr150 and dont see the problem you are having
what vmr settings do you use
and what decoder
try playing it back on the pc
sorry dont know what a xbmc is (ok xbox looked it up)
maybe your network is the bottleneck??

Increase the high quality bit rate (in config app, under capture sources I think)

Are you viewing on an analogue tv or LCD??

xbmc uses a form of overlay mode to display the video, like most dvd players..
actually it's the most accurate rendering of the mpeg2 stream..
but normally we are used to the nice filtering effects of vmr on the pc, so don't notice it..

no real way around it but to make very high bitrate recordings..
[go into config, edit capture source, edit the 'high' profile to 6000-10000 vbr]
or use something like 8000 cbr...[constant bitrate]

An analogue Philips 32pw9616.
I always use the 'high quality' setting, but I'll play around with the bitrate.

Ok, fast moving stuff can look a bit 'blurry' on some lcds...
