MCE remote vs Hauppauge remote. Which one?

The Hauppauge remote seems to have issues thinking I pressed the down button when I pushed the up button, and is otherwise sometimes just slow to respond. I am getting an MCE remote given to me. Which one is better? Which one do you guys use?

I've never had any problems with any of the Hauppauge remote (34 button, 45 button or MCE), but I do prefer this Microsoft remote for feel in your hand: http://www.kustom.co.uk/acatalog/5498.jpg

Hm, well I plugged the receiver for the hp/microsoft remote into my xp home box, and i do not have any driver cd's for it. It pops up as "eHome Infrared Tranceiver." Microsoft wants to only give me the software/drivers via windows update, but I'm not running media center edition, it's home, so it won't give me those updates.

Any ideas?

I've never had to install any drivers for the MCE remotes on my machines, but do a forum search because I'm sure others have had to go through it before.

I have the Hauppauge PVR-150MCE which comes with a MCE-compatible USB remote (rather than the Hauppauge one that plugs nto the card). I think this is basically the same as a Microsoft MCE remote.

AFAIK, you don't need any drivers for the MCE USB remote - it installs as a HID device. However (at least for the Hauppauge MCE version), you do need IR.EXE to be running with the GBPVR extensions (in Config, set the remote type to MCE and use the 45-button Hauppauge option), for anything other than the basic navigation buttons to work in GBPVR. Also, I found IR.EXE wouldn't restart after Standby and I had to write a wake-up script to do this.

I also found that some of the buttons (Green, Skip) didn't work as expected in MusicPlayer or MusicPlayer2 plugins - they seemed to send the commands twice - and I ended up removing IR.EXE from the startup, and using HIP to remap all the remote buttons (see the Wiki for details on where to get, and how to use HIP) and it now all works flawlessly including being able to start GBPVR from the "Green Button".

yea, home doesn't come with the drivers, but pro does...just search for irbus.inf and irbus.sys and copy the inf to inf and .sys to system32\drivers

there is also an 'alternate' driver on the web for use with HIP...
[that's the way i would go]

but i have never had any problems with the 45 button remote, and the 'toggle keys' in MCE one can be a pain sometimes... the repeat rates on Hauppauge one are much better than the MCE one..[scrolling fast much better]

MCE remote dongle is programmable with hip...not Haupp. one..
blast codes are programmable with MCE rem. and HIP, not Haupp. one..
best way probably to use Haupp. remote with MCE dongle and HIP...hehe

but either one works fine...the MCE one is short on keys when not using HIP..

Well not quite sure what I'm doing wrong now. I found the files and installed the irbus.sys and irbus.inf. Windows xp home is now happy. The receiver lights up everytime I hit a button on the remote, and I changed the remote in config to "MCE remote". However, when I try to use that remote nothing happens! It still responds to the hauppauge remote.

hmmm, do any keys work? in regular apps, do the arrow keys work?
have you rebooted twice?
if you kill the ir32.exe the Haupp. remote will stop working..may be causing conflict..
the MCE remote can also be used with the Haupp. ir32.exe blaster Smile
[requires a little edit to irremote.ini, MCE remote's already in there, just not enabled]

i would suggest using the 'alternate irbus driver' with HIP..
i think it now comes with it,it is available from his website..
that way you can map any buttons you want, and also use any remote you want! [HIP helps it learn new remotes and blast codes]

Well heck if I can use the remote with hauppauge's software that seems lkie it would be a bit easier.

Does that mean I don't need the receiver that the remote came with?

I found the irremote.ini file, however I do not feel comfortable editing it as I do not have much experience with this stuff and don't want to break anything with my other remote that is currently working fine Wink


What would I need to edit?

and i think that's all..Big Grin
it's actually one of the only remote 'standards' there is, RC6..
so i'm pretty sure the commands are hard-coded because of the standard..but it should act just like a regular MCE remote to the system as well..
