I assume that everyone else already knows this, but just having found it (don't ask), I'll sleep easier tonight... Smile
Quote:[B]How do you pronounce Hauppauge?
Hauppauge is a town in NY on Long Island. Hauppauge is pronounced HOP-HOG. The area around the headwaters of the Nissequogue (NISS-I-QUOG) River was dubbed Hauppauge by Native Americans; it means "overflowed land'' in the Algonquian language. Hauppauge boasts a large industrial park which is home to many well known companies.

I believe it is pronounced "Hop-pog".

My french girlfriend pronounces it "Haw Paw Jay" - lol

There are a lot of towns with bizzare names in New York and New Jersey. The mix of American Indian and old Dutch can be funny sometimes.

How about a town called "Fish Kill" or better yet "Fresh Kills"? "Kill" means river or stream in Dutch.

When I lived in Florida I owned an old motorboat made by a company called "Penn-Yann". I always assumed it was a Japanese company. I was surpised a few years ago while travelling across Long Island when I found a town named "Penn Yann".

I've had occasion to learn a bit of German, French (and New England english) over the years and when I first became aware of the name I assumed it was German and hence pronounced something like 'howpoj' (where 'j' is the soft French 'j'). It was only when I was looking through their FAQ that I realised they weren't German.

Well... to be more exact... a 'kil' is a Oceanic Trench, not a river, which actually makes even more sence.

Now that will definitely come in handy at trivial pursuits... Wink
