I am currently running GBPVR on a old computer (1.8 P4) and i'm thinking retiring it to the lounge to be run as a media center. I am also planning to get another computer which will be based in my office.

What I thought I might do is use the office PC as the main storage PC. The old PC will go in the lounge and have the tv card (only because the remote plugs into it). I am planning on connecting them via wifi.

My main question is what sort of demands are put on the network in terms of streaming media, or storing on another pc on the network?? Will WiFi handle it??

I could put the TV card in the new pc and use the old one purely as a client. The main down side of this is the remote wont work. Does anyone have a good idea to get around this??

I'd like to hear your thought or experiences before I go out and buy the hardware.

Thanks

Paul

Wifi should have no problem handling it. G is the recommended protocol to use for that.

wifi is not as good as copper as its not duplex (only sends data one way at a time)but it does work but suffers more when you fast forward etc

the client machine doesnt respond as quick as the server (some will argue this )

in my opinion you are best to have the fastest computer with the capture card in it but 1.7gig is fast enough to be able to watch and record at the same time make sure you have 1gig of ram buy a 300gig hard drive for recording
as far as storing goes you would be better saving on the same machine that does the recording (trying to record over wifi to another pc not something i would even bother trying to do Sad )
buy an mce remote and receiver about $60nz(you could put that toward the 300 gig hard drive for storage)
if you put the old pc in lounge with tuner card in it 1 gig of ram plus 300 gig hard drive you good to go oh you will need a video card that can handle direct3d ati9250 and up but thats a minimum i would go higher

the lag you get on a client machine can be a little annoying so make the client the one that you will watch tv on the least
