My Cable company is making me use a Motorola DCT 6416 to get HD and Digital Cable TV. They (shaw tv) say that do to the way they encrypt things it's the only box that will work.

Does anyone know if that means the end of GB-PVR for me? Can GB-PVR control this device?

All of the Motorola tuner and DVR boxes appear to have remote controls. If they are infrared LED based you may have good luck with the various I/R remote dongles used with GB-PVR.

Considering the instructions for remote controls mention programming universal remotes you may be in good shape.

No It's not. the end. I used to work for Shaw, and know that their STBs are all the same regarding GB-PVR control.

Basically you will connect your STB to your tuner card via the RCA cables. (maybe s-video or hdmi ) For GB-PVR to tell the STB to change channels, you'll need what's commonly called an IR blaster. It may have already come with your Tuner cards.

The blaster is very similar to the IR LED on your remote. You would place it near the eye on the STB.

Then you will either have to tell GB-PVR to use that IR blaster directly (if supported) or use something like HIP (actually it's the only thing that comes to mind besides Girder) to act as a go-between...

GB-PVR would say to Hip, "I want channel 201" Hip would send the IR codes (exactly the same as your remote would do) to the eye on the STB. And the channel will change.

The key is getting the IR codes from your remote into HIP. I will look to see if I still have them, but it shouldn't be too difficult to set them up yourself...

Also you can use change channels using firewire which is what I do. I have multiple boxes and that way I do not get crosstalk between the boxes.

So, I'm currently using a pvr-350 card that has a coax in. Does that mean I need to take the tuner card out and puchase a different video capture card that takes RCA/S-Video/hdmi? Does GB-PVR support that?

Also. I have a RCA -> Coax box. I could hook it up that way but two things jump to mind. I would be changing the channel at the wrong spot if I use the pvr-350 card (ie it would need to always be on channel 3) and two, Wouldn't the HD and/or Digital signals be yucky on coax?

Also, s-video and hdmi are only Video Signals (I think). How would gb-pvr get the audio and re-synce them?

According to what I see on the net, your 350 should have Video/Audio RCA and a SVideo inputs. I think it's an extra cord or plug, or 'break out' box...

If you connect your STB to those inputs, then you would not be tuning the card to any channel. It would be like 'line in' on a VCR type thing...

Yes, HDTV won't look like HDTV if you use SD inputs. Of course. If you do want to convert over to a HDTV system (and your system has enough grunt) then you would need a different card.

But remember this while you wander around the wiki.... The tuner will stay fixed to the input (composite in) and you would use something like HIP to control the STB to change channels... Possibly native support in GB-PVR too...

I do not know what type of issues you will have using the IR blaster that comes with your 350. But I suspect it should work fine.

When I was shopping for cards a while ago, I looked at a 350. Having both input and Video out, I thought that would be good. When I joined GB-PVR I saw many posts that suggested that the 350 was losing support with GB-PVR (for video out only - not capturing). That meant to me that I would still need a good Video Card to display my video, and so I got a couple of PVR 150 capture cards.

Your 350 should be just fine to capture video.

Ok, One more thing...

Does this solution mean that I would not be able to take advantage of the "Dual Tuner" via GB-PVR?

If you end up getting a new card, (although you may not have to) you can get one that comes with a blaster and a remote. If you use the Hauppauge blasters, you won't even have to mess with HIP. Sub has it set up so it is almost plug n play. Check the Wiki for more info on remote controlling a cable box.

If you have two tuners, you'll need two sources, that means two STBs...
