Relax... $15.00 is just because they didn't know how many people would sign up. Their target is $20.00 per year... or... less than one latte per month...

Not extortion...

Trust me, it's not going to be $15 per 3 months for long...and early adopters will not be penalised. Very soon those users that paid $15 dollars will get a change to the end date of their paid up subscription.

The schedules direct guys are trying to make it as cheap for you as they possibly can, but they obviously had no idea how many people would sign up so that had to play it safe initially. With the prices charged by the data supplier (TMS), Schedules Direct price to the end user is definitely not extorition.

Schedules Direct was formed as a NON profit organization by people who have played a HUGE part in free/open-source PVR software. They are not the bad guys. They simply brokered a deal with TMS so that individuals such as ourselves could purchase the data that was previously only available to corporations with very deep pockets. The higher the number of people that join the pool, the less it costs each individually. They have past the break even point which means that every new signup now will drop the price that much more.

The guys at Schedules Direct have taken on a very big task and accomplished it in a timeframe that boggles the mind. They have donated more of their time than anyone could have asked of them. I can only imagine the headaches and sleepless nights they have had. I do not envy the position in which they have put themselves, but I for one am very grateful.

I would not fault them had they given themselves salaries (which is perfectly legal... and justified IMO) but they did not, which speaks volumes as to their commitment to the PVR community.

Robert posted this earlier today:
Quote:The original plan was for Paypal recurring subscriptions. Since we're close to announcing some very good annual pricing, I'm not sure it's worth recurring for a once a year thing.
So, we may not have to wait much longer to see what the planned "annual fee" will be.

As I've said before, people in the UK and probably other parts of Europe don't get "free EPG"; what's a few dollars to keep a great thing going?

(Well, the UK & Europe do get "free EPG" after they pay well over US$200 annually to license each TV and capture device they own....)

In the uk we do get a free epg (you do not suddenly get access after forking out for the fee).

Also, the license fee is for each premises, not per receiving device

No offense, but you're coming off as an offensive n00b.

Tribune Media (zap2it.com) is for profit and was nice enough to give PVR hobbyists access to their COMMERCIAL data. They were getting ripped off by pay PVR providers taking undue advantage and I do not blame them one bit for pulling the plug on the free data stream.

SchedulesDirect popped up in the interim as a reasonably long-term solution for we hobbyists to access EPG data legitimately. They made the appropriate deals to get licensed access to Tribune's EPG data (i.e. THEY NEGOTIATED ACTUAL $$$ TRANSFER) so that we could have something more stable than a web scraper.

US$15/90 days is a drop in the bucket compared to what other people might charge for a commercial EPG, and was only intended to be a temporary stopgap until they got a feel for the actual $$$ required. SD fully intends to drop the price. I was happy to pay them my $15 to restore my GB-PVR EPG.

SchedulesDirect is a good group and worthy of support from every PVR hobbyist. People whining about shelling out $15/90 days probably have monthly pay TV subscriptions (cable or satellite) not to mention ISP bills and cellphone plans. You want to talk extortion, go after someone who actually deserves it. Until then, troll somewhere else.

That's why I switched from zap2it to the Yapi2xml program. Seems just as easy to me, it's free, and it seems to give me a longer timeframe in which to search for shows.
