I have a couple hi-def videos that play fine in Windows Media Player, but when I try to play them in GB-PVR, I only get the audio & the screen stays in 'My Videos'. I can pause & fast-forward/rewind, but the video image never displays.

I have the Haali & Matroska splitters installed. FFDShow is not installed. GB-PVR & WMP are both set to use Nvidia Purevideo for video & AC3Filter for audio. I have tried VMR7, VMR9, VMR9Custom, & Overlay video renderers with the same result each time. Anyone have any experience with this?

What kind of video is in the mkv and mp4 containers. xvid? h264? You're probably missing a compatible video decompresser.

h264. I was under the impression that if it works in Windows Media Player, it should work in GB-PVR since GBPVR uses WMP for its playback. Am I missing something?

Thats usually the case. Occasionally you get decoders or splitter filters that do special tricks that are only compatible with WMP, but its pretty rare. A better test is downloading and running GraphEdit, then selecting the 'render media file' menu option and picking your file. If it cant find a set of decoders there, then it wont work in GB-PVR either.

You're right. Incompatible streams in GraphEdit. That's a shame.

Thanks sub.

I'm sure you'd be able to get it working by installing some alternative decoders. Its just that the decoders you're currently using arent entirely directshow compliant, or are in some way incompatible with the file you're trying to watch.

what decoder are you using? I have had good results with the following combination:
for MPEG2: PureVideo
for DVD Audio: AC3 Filter

everything else!
CoreAVC
the CCCP

I had problems with the xvid decoder that came with k-lite, did goofy things with subtitles (like hujacking the stream so direct vob-sub couldnt work Sad)

good luck, let me know if you have any problems!

Slightly off-topic, but can anyone explain to a dummy why there is a need for another container - matroska? I have high-def .WMV files and they play fine. I also use 'HR' .AVI files (xviD and DivX) and they play fine - both with hardware acceleration. I tried a matroska file (720p) using VLC media player and it ran like a dog! Totally unwatchable about 2FPS- I don't think any harware accelaration was available. What does Haali & Matroska offer that cannot be achieved in existing containers?
