Trying to GBPVR running with this card and running into issues.

First off... my system is the following:

Windows XP Service Pack 2
Athlon XP 3000+
ATI Radeon 9700
Hauppauge WinTV-HVR1600
1gb Memory

First off, it tells me that VRM9 is not supported. I am using Overlay Mode as VRM7 didn't allow me to change channels.

I configured my channels (after much trial and error) and am able to watch live tv... however when I click "Live TV" it itakes upwards of 45 seconds until a channel comes up. I notice that CPU usage is 85% to 90% during this time. It's also very flaky changing channels... screen flickering etc.

Interestingly, I use the WatchHDTV program and it runs beautifully on this system. It seems to give me more encoder choices in both video an audio as compared to GBPVR so I'm wondering if the problem could lie therein somewhere.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your ATI Radeon 9700 should support VMR9. If you're getting this error message, then you probably need to update or ATI drivers. Or possibly you're trying to do this over Remote Desktop? Remote Desktop does not support VMR9.

A long delay before video is usually a sign that directshow is having a hard time identifying the decoders to use for playback of this type of audio/video. First thing to try is explicity selecting the audio/video decoders on the playback tab of the config app, instead of relying on 'system default'. Having too many decoder (or installing "codec packs" from the net) can sometimes cause these

If after making sure its not using system default, the problem is still happening, reproduce the problem, then zip and attach the logs and I'll take a look.

I have the most recent ATI catalyst drivers. In fact, I even setup a new install of Windows XP on a separate partition to ensure that it was nothing old hanging around causing my problems.

I am also not using the system default selections although I've tried every combination at least once. Again, I don't see as many codecs listed as listed in the WatchHDTV utility.

Here are the logs... this is when set to overlay manager since I cannot get the error when I try vmr9.

Thanks.

Yep, looking at the logs I can see GB-PVR is only using 4 seconds of the time when starting live tv, the rest is being consumed by Directshow trying to do its own internal decoder checks etc as it "renders the graph". This problem is most likely being caused by one or two problem decoders installed on your machine. You often get things like this when users have installed codec packs, or have too many decoders install.

All I can suggest is uninstalling decoders.

I'm not sure about the other problem where your 9700 is claiming it is not supporting VMR9. Are you doing this locally on the machine? ie, not via Remote Desktop or VNC, or in a VM?

I am not remoting into the machine in any fashion. This is a fresh Windows XP install, but this problem also occurred on my old Windows XP install.

My question is... if I run outside of VMR9 with Overlay Manager... what reduced functionality am I going to have?

Because if it's significant, I may just surrender not waste my time.

The new PVXR2 user interface requires VMR9, so effectively you'd be stuck with the old GBPVR.exe user interface if you cant run VMR9.

If you really have a ATI Radeon 9700, then I'm sure it must be something driver related. I know several people here use this device with VMR9. I'm also using an older Radeon 9250 with VMR9.

Yes, I have a true ATI Radeon 9700 that I've had since 2003 when I bought it for $450.

Maybe try installing DirectX9. That might enable VMR9 for you.

No, that didn't do it.

Oh well, thanks for your help. I guess I'll have to be content with WatchHDTV for the time being.
