I finally got GBPVR working nicely w/ my HDHomeRun. Recored a quick 30min show yesterday and it looked and worked great! So today I recorded Sesame Street for the kids and Prison Break for my wife. The audio on both of these shows (1 hr each) slowly went out of sync until it was almost 1 - 1.5 seconds behind the video. I tried playing back in Windows Media and VLC. I did some searching on here and there was talk about MUX's and decoders.
- Do the audio/video decoders effect how the show is recorded thru GBPVR or just the playback?
I ask because I tried all of my Audio Decoders in the Playback tab and at the end of each show they were all still out of sync. Am I going to have to pick an Audio Decoder, record an hour long show to see if it's out of sync again, if it is, then switch decoders and record another hour long show??

Thanks!

The audio/video decoders only affect playback not recording. The mux filter used can affect recording.

Thanks for the quick response Sub!

Is that the BDA Multiplexer option in the Misc tab?

I had been using the CyberLink Mux now I'll switch to the ATI MPEG Mux and see what happens.

What does checking "Enable MultiDec plugin support" do for me, or against me?

Also, in the Playback tab, what will the Audio Renderer effect? Is that only if I output to some other audio source other then the audio output on my mobo?

Be aware that BDA Multiplexer option will list muxes that may not be installed. You need to run MuxChecker to see what muxes you have available.

Just leave it off.

Its a playback thing, but can have an effect on playback sync since the audio device is often used for timing.

So i set my Video/Audio Decoder and Audio Renderer all to System Default and everything is fine, no audio out of sync issues. Go figure.

Thanks again for the help and quick responses...

Since I got your attention, do you know of any free-ware (I'd even pay $30 or $40) that turns these recorded shows in to something I can burn to DVD. Or at least something that lets me cut the commercials out...

I dont personally burn recordings to DVD, so I'm not a good person to answer that. Someone else might be able to give some advice on doing this though.

There is a couple of DVD burning plugins, but I've not tried them myself.

Check out the wiki under utilties for:

comskip - This will create a 'cut' file marking the commercial spots in the recording. This can be run while the recording is happening, or after the fact. It also has a mode where you can view the recording and preview/edit the commercial cut points to fine tune.

comclean - These are a series of batch files that utilize the file(s) that comskip creates to split apart the recording, remove the commercials and paste the video back together without the commericals

There is a new plugin ComTweak that allows you to create/view/modify the commercial cuts right within the GBPVR UI.

Comskip is great but it doesn't really remove the commericals. It just creates a "map" that allows the playback to skip over them. It's also not 100% (close but not 100%). Having them in there still is not acceptable when wanting to create a DVD.

If you want to truly cut commercials in order to burn them to DVD, the best program out there is Video Redo Plus.
http://www.videoredo.com/

You can trial it for free and then will have to buy it when the trial runs out. Believe me I have tried a million of them and this one is the best! It will auto search commercials and then let you fine tune it, in order to burn a completely clean copy to DVD. You can also put the cleaned up copies on your hard disk in your video library folder and play them back from GBPVR.

I put "My recordings" on one hard drive and point "My Videos" (the edited ones) on another, second hard drive.

After editing with VideoRedo I also use Nero Ultra 7 to do menus and assemble the cleaned up files into a cool playback format. Don't use Nero to cut commercials though, because it's mpeg output format is not standard and won't play back through GBPVR.

Good luck!

Zork, thanks for the recommendation. I'm using the trial right now and like how easy it is to cut out commercials.

Back to the topic I originally started... does anyone know why ONE channel (of course the one I want to record the most from, PBS - sesame street, reading rainbow, clifford - for my kids) is the only station that has audio out of sync issues?? By the end of a 30min show, it's about .5 sec behind and after an hour, it's a good 1.5 - 2 sec behind.... I've tried mapping / recording the analog version and the digital version and I have the same issue with both.

Does anyone know how to record straight from the HDHR so I can see if it is GBPVR effecting it?

Thanks!

The easiest option is to use DVD players that can play files from a disk - i.e. those that can play Mpeg4 files like DivX. They are so cheap now - £20 - and they will play all your recordings as is, so you can get around 3-4 hours of recordings onto a 4.7gb disk. I do use Videoredo to cut commercials, but only to save on file space as it's so quick to FF past them anyway...
