- especially if GBPVR could check whether some computer is down and then redirect where to record - including possibility for me to shut down / set a service time for a specific machine - for upgrades etc

It's a nice idea :-). Do a wee search on the phrase "recording farm", other like-minded folks have mooted this nirvana before....

Yes, it would allow a small quiet pc containing just capture cards where the all the tv signals are present and a nice grunty noisy server in the basement.
