Software sound compressor

This may come out sounding kind of strange, but is there any way I can insert a compressor into the audio stream?

The dynamic range between channels and also between program content and advertisements is driving me crazy. I know I could accomplish this with a hardware solution (insert a stereo compressor before going to my amplifier) but I was hoping to do this in the software realm.

Does anyone understand what I am talking about or have any advice to share? I'm sick of grabbing the remote to perform drastic volume changes. I just want even sound levels.

Use ac3filter and it will do dynamic compression if you set it
