Can I delete MSI file

Hi Sub!

I downloaded to temp directory which I use for all my downloads on Firefox. Yesterday I deleted GBPVRxxxx.msi file which is the installer package you deliver GBPVR in. Next day when I re-started my machine it all of a sudden started to look after installer and then stopped working. Do I need to keep installer in the same directory as GBPVR itself or will it just un-pack, register all file and then you are free to delete MSI?

Directory structure:

O:\ (for all temp downloads)
G:\ (for all media related application like GBPVR)

You can say that again. I've had this with previous versions of GBPVR, it seems to carnk up the installer again on random occasions. Last few versions seem to have been OK though.

As soon as GBPVRxxxx.msi was downloaded and run again then GBPVR started to record as it should, so it seem it would need to have this installer (MSI) kept somewhere even after it is have done its work. I run MSI as a "repair" install.

I really love 7-zips feature of snappy zip and unzip of complete folder to back up my working install of GBPVR. Could you, sub, distribute GBPVR as a 7-zip compressed version in the future instead of MSI installer? The only problem I can see with it would be to have people to use batch file for registering and un-registering filters.

I think 'repair' is the point - I've never looked it up but it seems when you start some programs that were installed via MSI, windows checks some of its credentials to see if it's still as installed and tries to fix stuff it doesn't like... try installing three or four different versions of MS Access on the same machine and switching between them.

Self reparing software is a great idea though - it protects all of us from ourselves, although occasionally it can get in the way of 'innovation'...

I sympathize with your problem but my vote would be to keep the msi downloads.

I don't think thats quite accurate. I know I have used the MSI from the desktop, then deleted it - and it never asks me for it.
Have you removed anything else? (such as one of the web directories, or logs etc)

It seems that every file that is installed by GBPVR needs to be present to enable starting without a repair.

I think you miss understood what I meant by "repair". It is an option when you download this installer again and then run it as you can either use install, repair or un-install. Take a look when you right click installer next time, so will you see those option. So it was not a "repair" that was trigged by itself that began my problem, but that I had deleted this MSI installer file from my download directory and the day after when I booted my computer up it began to ask to "update". I thought this was a new feature that this new version of GBPVR had and accepted without thinking too much about it. It started looking for a CD or installer executive (typical GUI for windows) and then I interrupted it as there was nothing to find and my brain came to action that it was funny that it did not download anything. I came to my senses and downloaded again correct version for my install and then it instantly began to record as that was the time to make a recording I had pending.

It is never good to install double or triple version of any software on Windows as Windows register can not keep those copies apart, after all Windows XP have not become artificially intelligent despite MS trying hard to get there someday.

I did not change anything in GBPVR directory as I keep it on G:\GBPVR\ so no change...from my side.

I wonder what caused that to appear though? It usually only pops the update / install gbpvr dialog when some file has been removed which windows had expected to find.

I've had that on a few occasions as well, but as far as I can tell that was always after I removed a file that I thought was useless (like the placeholder.txt files), but the installer apparently differs in opinion and reinstalls it.

I guess the installer checks all the installation files upon startup of gbpvr/pvrx2 and performs a reinstall if any of them are missing.
