With the number of codecs out there these these days, I feel like I'm shooting in the dark when installing these packages. Does someone have practical suggestions or tips as to the best install options of K-Lite mega pack or a more suitable codec package for use with GBPVR? Mainly I get confused if I should enable ffdshow or one of the custom filters. e.g. hali, gabest etc... Also I would be interesting to know what order do people install their codecs? before or after their video drivers and apps and GBPVR?

After I've used K-lite a couple of years and on and off have had problems with some audio-codec, I've uninstalled k-lite and only use AC3-filter.
I havn't had any problems since.

I'm personally against the codec packs. Too many codecs can be just as bad and not enough. I only install the ones I need. I will say I have a number of friends using the K-Lite pack with no problems.
videohelp.com has a thread about packs if you want to read more. http://forum.videohelp.com/topic191700.html

Thanks for that valuable advice. It is very tempting to install all those codecs in the hope of covering all open ends. Which leaves me with the ffdshow issue. GBPVR config has a bit for checking 'use ffdshow if available'. It sometimes pops up asking if it should use it just once or all the time. Is that there because it is superior or because it is a compatibility issue? Looking at ffdshow options make me feel like I'm shooting in the dark again.

some people use ffdshow filters but historically ffdshow has caused gbpvr users more problems than it has fixed. So if you want to get gbpvr up and running, it might be an idea to disable "use ffdshow" and uninstall ffdshow from your pc.

codecs:
I use an mpeg decoder (nvidia purevideo)
xvid to playpack xvid and divx files.
there may be 1 or 2 others floating around, I can;t remember.

Like pcostanza, I prefer to stay away from codec packs and just install what I need.

from my personal experience k-lite does some fun things with codecs that breaks things in GB-PVR. basically only applicable to people like me with anime videos in weird formats (MKV with two audio streams and a subtitle stream) subs werent working for me because of some of the decoders they included. I am currently using coreAVC, the CCCP, and Purevideo for video, and AC3 filter for DVD audio.

+1 to the anti-K-lite crowd. It's a great bundle if all you want to do is watch vids on a computer. But for quality HTPC purposes the K-lite codec paks fall flat. Usually the AC3 filter, an MPEG2 decoder, and an MPEG4 decoder are all that you need.

I install CCCP and call it a day. It plays everything except RealMedia files. It's endorsed by numerous video groups including the creator of .mkv files. Like Ted said, if you only play a couple types of files, it's not really needed, but if you play anime files and some other potentially-weird stuff it's probably the way to go.

I've had by far the best luck with Gabest MPV video decoder. CCCP includes a hacked version of FFDshow, and I use a few filters in that for post-processing. Sometimes filters don't make much difference, sometimes the difference is huge.

K-lite is K-crappy.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

Don't use k-lite.
It once broke GBPVR.
I use purevideo or cyberlink or windvd for mpeg2
ffdshow for everything else.

since all of my mpeg2 recordings are made at the same resolution as my TV I don't need any deblocking or scaling & PP on gbpvr has always seemed to tank the CPU.

For everything else I use FFDSHOW to resize & deblock all recordings I convert to xvid.

It makes a difference without tanking the cpu when I use it on a TV with SD resolution.

I'm going to look into CCCP I don't think i've ever heard of it before.

The K-lite being refered to this in this thread is a codec pack. It has nothing to do with Kazza.
