Hi again. I'm about to buy this card for about $80 and I just wondered if I will need a splitter on my comcast cable to pick up the QAM and regular cable at the same time, would I need one cable going into the ATSC port and another cable going into the NTSC?

I'm hoping I can get the QAM HD channels and NTSC channels with one cable going into the card?

Yes, you will need a splitter.

Yes, the way I set mine up is as follows:

Code:
[FONT=Courier New]            +-- STB -----|NTSC in (Analog)[/FONT]
[FONT=Courier New]Wall|---Splitter[/FONT]
[FONT=Courier New]            +------------|ATSC in (QAM)[/FONT]

My STB is a Motorola DCT700, and I used a high(er) quality splitter.

I don't understand that at all:eek: It looks like you have a splitter with two cables going into the card.

Yes, that's exactly right.

The HVR-1600 has two coax inputs (ie two receivers), one for analog cable, the second for your ATSC/QAM signal.

My comcast cable box feeds the cable channels that I have service for (ie. Encore, Showtime, HBO,...). The cable box I have is not HD capable, so it feeds the analog signals.

Comcast also broadcasts the local stations in HD using a QAM signal. I take the signal right from the splitter (ie not thru the STB) and connect to the ATSC/QAM input on the card.

whats STB stand for?

So I'm going to need a 4 way splitter on cable that comes out of my wall. one for the cable internet modem, one for my TV, and two for the HVR 1600 card. I don't know if I can even get a 4-way splitter. I might have to hook two splitters together?

STB
STB-Set Top Box.
Find your nearest Radio Shack and get their 'gold' splitter. It works fine for me. You may benefit from an amplifier but that made no difference for me as my cable company already has one on my line.....they call it a line conditioner.
Just a suggestion but I, like others around the US, haven't had much luck with QAM from our cable company. I've had poor luck with Cox. You may do better with a quality ATSC antennae instead.

Mine was a 3 way splitter and I think it was about $12. A cable tech told me not to skimp on splitters or cables as a number of calls he goes out on simply involves better splitters and cables.

Is the QAM for the HVR 1600 supported right out of the digital box so to speak? I'm using BTV right now, and I still prefer the interface, but QAM is a pain. Requires plugins and lots of configuring mojo.
