I'm new to GBPVR, but not to DVB-T.
In the past year I've been using:
last free version of DVBWebScheduler(4.0.14) to record DVB-T into .ts format;
VLC to view the recordings (& subtitles if needed);
ProjectX to demux, clean recordings and extract subtitles I wish to archive onto dvd.

I'm trying to use GBPVR to replace the 3 bits of software I use.

Problem 1 - BDA Muxer
=====================
Am I right in thinking I shouldn't need one if I wish to record into .ts?
In GB-PVR config/Misc2/BDA Multiplexer, I tried both options
Microsoft MVR-MS
TS Mux.

I get audio errors when using either of them.
With DVR-MS the audio looses sync the video after about 30 seconds.
With TS Mux, the audio stays in sync, but fades/blips evey 2 seconds.
I use VLC 0.8.6f to play them back.

Does this suggests there is something wrong with my system setup?

When I use DVBWebScheduler to record in .ts it seems to play back fine.
I seem to be missing something!

Problem 2 - Subtitles
=====================
Do I need to record in .ts to preserve the DVB-T subtitles?
When I used a Cyberlink MPEG Muxer, I get .mpg without the option of seeing the subtitles.

Would it be possible to use GB-PVR to
a) record into .ts format
b) playback .ts files?

It seems to do a) already - but I can't get it to work properly!
Would it be possible for users to plugin a player like VLC to achieve b)?

GB-PVR has some problems playing back .ts files. This capability was new in the current release and it doesnt yet do a good job of it. Most people use either the dvr-ms or cyberlink or ati mux. If you are getting audio/video sync issues with these mux options, its most likely related to the combination of audio/video decoder you're using.

GB-PVR doesnt record DVB subtitles regardless of what mux your use.

Thanks for the clarification.

I tested the Cyberlink Mux, the audio/video is in sync and looks fine and the output is .mpg.
I was hoping to record in .ts to preserve the DVB-T subtitles, but the next response answers that!
One thing I don't understand is why I get the a/v sync issues recording in .ts or DVR-MS. Which muxers do these two recording types use?

I assumed it did and didn't check properly!

I made the mistake of assuming GBPVR orginated in the UK, but I've since realised it's HQ is in New Zealand and you don't have DVB-T subtitles.

The Microsoft DVR-MS files are usually pretty good with audio/video sync. If you're enountering any problem with this, then I'm sure it'll come down the combination of audio/video decoder you're using.

I use the .ts format for my dvb-t recordings. I find that it handles signal drops better than the others. With the dvr-ms a signal drop can cause it to skip a few frames, sometimes even a few seconds or more. With the .ts frame you normally get an audio glitch or pixelation but no skipping.

The only real downside is that you cannot start watching a program currently being recorded.

Disable the internal ts viewer and install this one instead.

Yeah, I prefer .ts as well. I find VLC allows you to view a file that is in the process of recording - just don't FFWD too much otherwise it gets a bit screwy!

Thanks for your reply - didn't notice it sooner.

I gave it a go but it didn't make any difference.
------
Since then I've tried another experiment.
I borrowed an additional USB capture device and tried a simultaneous 2 minute recording of 2008/05/0838 BBC2 Jackanory Junior:
PCI_... - GBPVR 1.2.9 using Hauppauge Nova-T PCI (90002);
USB_... - DVBWebscheduler 4.0.14 using Hauppauge Nova-T USB stick.
The (trimmed) files are here - http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AWJ31H6W.

It doesn't make any difference if I swap the capture devices around.
GBPVR 1.2.9 TS recordings have audio stutter regardless which capture card I use.
Changes to GVPVR:
config.xml - <UseBuiltInTSReader>false</UseBuiltInTSReader>;
NativeUtilities.dll modified 2008/03/18 10.28.08, 1249280 bytes.
My system:
P4-2.4/1 GB/XP Pro SP3;
Antivirus disabled;
Firewall disabled;
Screensaver disabled.
I use VLC 0.8.6f to review both recordings on this system.
The PCI_.. file has audio stutters.
The USB_.. file does not.
They were produced at the same time on the PC. The video seems ok on both files. As the audio stutter is the noticable difference between the two files, I suspect the GBPVR is somehow creating corrupt .ts recordings.

Right, well then as Sub has said, it is probably the codec you are using in GBPVR that is causing problems.

What codec are you using? Have you tried a different one?
I currently use the Nvidia PureVideo codec, but have used the Hauppauge one in the past.

Have you tried the directX fix? http://gbpvr.com/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/FAQ/Codec#toc6

Just to be sure, run one of the bda scanner utilities to determine the quality and signal strength of your DVB-T signal.

Fair enough, although I still don't understand.
Are the codecs you mention to do with playback or recording?
As far as I can tell, the Nvidia PureVideo codec and directX suggestions seem to relate to playback issues.
I'm not sure I have a playback issue becuase I think the corruption is on the actual .ts file.

So are you saying that when you play the two clips it plays perferectly on your PC(s)? If they do then I'd agree with you.

The mux I'm recording from shows very good signal quality and stength.

Codecs are for playback only as far as I am aware.
I have not tried your clip yet, but I will do tonight when I am at home.
Out of interest, what codec are you using in GBPVR, as listed in the config ulitity.

I had asked sub a similar question in the near past about .ts recordings and he had stated this was new to 1.2.9 release and is aware that there is a problem for some people, and i believe is working on making it better in the next GBpvr release.

P.S. i have audio sync issues with .ts. My dvr-ms recordings are perfect. But to sumarize, i believe there is a known problem with .ts in 1.2.9 that is being worked on for the next release
