I have seen several threads in this forum stating that users are using the ATI Avivo video decoder and getting good results. I have kind of a noob question -- where do you get this decoder? I have an ATI 3450 and installed the full Catalyst V8.8, but there are no new decoders that show up in Gbpvr configuration. Is there some trick to get them to show up in Gbpvr?

There is an Avivo convertor "package" that can be downloaded, but this is for the 1xxx series cards only. And as far as I know, it is for hardware accelerating the transcoding of video files. I don't think it includes an MPEG codec.

As far as I can tell, there is no "Avivo Package" for the 2xxx or 3xxx ATI cards. You have to use a decoder that knows how to access the Avivo functionallity, such as the newer cyberlink decoders.

I am pretty sure that the Avivo package also contains the ATI mpeg decoder and ATI Mux

Indeed it does:

"For X1000 video cards or higher"
Apart from installing mpeg decoder and MUX, it actually works very well doing what it was designed for - transcoding video. Makes very quick Divx files from your recorded TV programs, for example...

I tried this with my setup below and got stuttering every sec or so. Probably something I did wrong, I tweak everything too much.

I can validate it is for the 3650, though

Can you tell me which decoders and video format you use on your system to get clean playback? I have been unable to get acceptable playback with the 3450. Currently using VMR9 Custom (FSE is only slightly better) with the Purevideo decoder.

With regard to the ATI decoder, I did finally find and install it, but when I click on the configure button in Gbpvr, I do not get any configuration for the decoder - nothing happens. I know I have read elsewhere in the Gbpvr forums about different deinterlacing modes that others have tried with the ATI decoder. Also, the playback with this decoder is much, much, worse than Purevideo.

I haven't paid attention to it in awhile, but if Avivo can work with Nvidia cards, I'm guessing it works with 1xxx+ cards.
I bet Michael Bay uses GBPVR because it's awesome:

I use AVIVO decoders for 3450 and MPEG2 playback is smooth - my test is BNN in Canada with a stock ticker which makes it a very good test case. The only thing was that it's defaults caused a very washed out picture so I had to spend time tweaking gamma and brightness. After that, the picture is been very good. I'm using a s-video to composite adapter as well.

I believe you make the changes in Catalyst Control Center but I may be wrong on that. I use the ATI mpeg decoder with a 3450 on Vista using FSE and have no issues
