Hi, I am new to the forum and I hope that I am posting in the right place.

I am located in western USA. I am using a C-Band system made out of a 7' dish with a motorola 4DTV 922 receiver.

I am planning on building my own PC PVR to try and record shows that the wife misses and then I hear all the complaints.
Here in US choice for recording is TIVO and subscription to a small dish.
I LOVE my C-Band dish and I would like to stay with it.

My question is: Does the GBPVR software using mapping for sats that is used on DirectTV or Dishnet? or is something proprietary?

Thank youSmile

I am probably out of my depth here, but I will pass this by you and you can decide if it makes sense.

I am assuming your C band receiver is a stand alone settop box and not a digital PCI/PCIe card for your PC, and that it can be controlled by a IR remote. If this is the case it is most likely that you will want an analog TV card in your PC to connect to the sat receivers video out.
You will also require a way of changing the channel on the sat receiver from the PVR this is normally acheived by having an IR blaster which GBPVR uses to sends the channel number that you set in the configuration to be sent to the sat receiver.
The main issue with this mode of operation is that you dont get EPG and you will need to source your own EPG for all the channels you wish to view/record from. Another issue can be the reliability of the IR signal being understood by the SAT receiver although the IR blasters are "taught" the correct IR codes to use from your remote it is by no means 100% on many sat receivers.
It is however how many of us use GBPVR as we have provider settop boxes that are required to decrypt the TV channels.

Hope that helps

Cheers

Thanks for your reply.
The following message is taken from a site that has created a unit to bridge the gap between my receiver (stand alone unit) and the PC PVR that I will build.

"TiVo, ReplayTV and other DVR's weren’t designed with 4DTV C-Band in mind, The 4DTranslator "Bridges This Gap" allowing you to use a stand alone DVR with your 4DTV entertainment system."
DVRBLACKBOX, Inc. the makers of the "4DTranslator" a DVR control converter which a 4DTV C-Band Receiver can be controlled by a TiVo®, ReplayTV® Digital Video Recorder or PC based recorder like SageTV®. This electronic device acts in a way like DirecTV, Dishnet, or Cable Box to a DVR and acting like a smart remote control to 4DTV. This allows the DVR to act as if it was designed for 4DTV C-Band satellite directly. Therefore, DVRBLACKBOX, Inc. is where we are "Bridging the Gap!"

Personally, I would like to cut my cost on this project by going to a software that is free like the GBPVR.
If that is not possible then I have no choice but to buy the SAGE TV for about $80.00.Sad

Thank you again

This 4DTranslator device connects between a "Stand Alone" TiVo, ReplayTV, SageTV, or other DVR, and to the C-Band 4DTV 920 / 922 receiver. These "Stand Alone" DVR’s which where designed for the users of DirecTV, Dishnet and Cable, but since these DVR's can receive any video "Source" from there inputs they can be used with C-Band satellite also. The issue is that you need to use a channel guide which is designed for DirecTV or Dishnet, but the MetaConnect channel guide was designed with 4DTV in mind so this guide has 99% of all C-Band channels in its on-screen guide. So is using a channel guide designed for service “A” ok to use with 4DTV service the short answer is an absolutely yes, because CNN, Fox News, or HBO are the same whether its by C-Band or any other source. The description of 4DTranslator device itself is best described as a "TRANSLATOR" intercepting the channel change signal from a DVR and then converting that data to something 4DTV could understand. It's smart by the fact it always knows where you been, where you're going and the best way to get there using the fewest IR control keys.

This info is also posted on their site. Maybe is makes it clearer on what this unit is able to do.

Thanks
